What gun dogs do you have and why?
I have a Griff, for the same reasons as gonehuntin. Hunt everything from Sept to March. I like having a dog that is good on early season chickens, and can still take a long blind across icy waters for Canada's in January. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170201/d7ab7d5bdf94cff212e6929d6a5bd189.jpg...

I did it for 12 years with a britt and a lab, put a lot of wild birds in the bag with those two. I didn't need the lab for any retrieving situations, but in cattails and standing grain fields he was awesome. Handling became more important, afterwards I was ready for only one dog. Got a griff, he is ...

I do the same style of hunting, for many years I had a lab and a brittany. Both were great upland and waterfowl dogs, weather permitting of course. I wanted to have only one dog, I got a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, couldn't be any happier, surpassed all my expectations both upland and waterfowl.

After years of a lab and a britt together, I studied the same thing when I purchased my WPG. Note that every dog is different, but I've seen a lot of things that carry over. On upland work, I do the same thing as I did with my britts. On retrieving, I do most of the same drills as I did my lab, but ...

Si, I disagree with bonasa and don't think you've done anything wrong by exposing your dog to running roosters. As long as your pup doesn't catch any birds, he's not learning any bad habits. In fact, I'd say you're lucky to have released birds that behave like wild birds to work your dog on. Reloca...

After many weeks of frozen up solid, a few areas started to thaw. Went waterfowling on Sunday morn to find once again our 25 acre lake frozen solid, except for where 200 or so geese were sitting. If the dog is conditioned you should be fine. I would also suggest toughening up the pads before the trip also, and get some good boots for you and the dog. I hunt mine for 5 days straight in MT and 3 days non stop here in KS on many occasions. Good luck and have fun.
