Re: Brittany Spaniel-Fuzzy Hair Coat

I have heard of the development of fuzzy haircoats in neutered or spayed dogs. All 3 of our Brittanies were spayed at 16 to 18 months of age, and two of them went from having flat, hard coats to fuzzballs. The other one kept her normal coat of hair. We have had 3 Springers, a GSP and a Lab and Golde...

Re: Do you always stay with the same breed?

The first dogs we hunted with were a Golden Retriever followed by two Brittanies. Then came a Lab, and another Britt. All great dogs. Just for a change, we got a GSP, and really liked her too. I ran all our pointing dogs in the NAVHDA system. Then as we got a little older, we changed to FBESS, and n...

I have a steel comb with closely set teeth on one end, and more widely spaced teeth on the other end. I use Absorbine ShowSheen to detangle hair and release burrs, but I'm sure cowboy magic is fine as well. Either one applied before the hunt will keep most burrs from getting deeply set into the hair.

Since you're committed to two dogs, stagger them. Five years apart is about right. That way you're never without a dog when one can't hunt anymore. This. We usually have 3 to 5 dogs at various ages, and they are spaced 2 to 4 years apart. At one time, we did get two pups only 16 months apart to get...
