I never bought into the seperation anxiety thing..i think the only reason a dog stresses over their human leaving is dominance, in a really young pup maybe some insecurity issues!!..some may look at it like the dog whines or has a fit when they leave because the dog loves them so much but IMO it is ...

Re: PB&J for a snack
As I mentioned in my post, my dogs will eat scat afield. I know that's not uncommon, but both dogs know better (especially the older one), to do that in front of me. They don't start a hunt doing that, but after some time afield, I will almost definitely find one of them gorging on it desperately--...

Re: Puppy exercise
Let the pup exercise at its natural pace. I wouldn't set up play scenarios (like fetch) where it will be put in a position to exert itself. Its hard to explain but its kinda like when a puppy has had enough to eat, you just know. It really is important to avoid injury at this age. You dont play fet...

I guess its just one more opinion, but at ten weeks old I think I would be about ten more weeks away from figuring this out at all. I wont chime in here on this just because I see where this is wanting to head. Re: WHAT AGE TO START THE STARTER PISTOL?
I have found I get a lot less reaction to a shotgun than I do with a rifle or pistol. I am sure it is because the report is lower pitched and not near as piercing. And I am completely convinced making noice around a pup of any age gets it used to noice but the only way to get them used to a gunshot...

I start at about 4 months, but only if I am working with birds. Never use a gun of any type just to see if it will scare the pup. Ruth, I am taking Bella out this weekend to my hunting club and I am going to run her on some chukar. I plan on firing a 209 pistol behind my back so it muffels the sound a little. Re: WHAT AGE TO START THE STARTER PISTOL?
Ruth - There are lots of ways to introduce gunfire, but probably the best and safest and surest way is to have the youngster in full chase of a flying bird. HOF trainer Buddy Smith does this with his pups and his weapon of choice is a 12 ga.!! I am not quite so aggressive. I use .22 crimps to start...

Ruth, You can introduce anytime when the correct opportunity happens but there is no rush. I've normally waited till the were several months old and started withthe shotgun while they are out chasing a bird 30 or 40 yards away. Just fire in the opposite direction. After many years of doing it this ...
