Re: pigeons for training

If you're desperate call a pigeon racig club and act like you're just getting started in the hobby and wanted to get started cheap. Just don’t tell them why you’re interested in keeping birds, they’ll stonewall you. Even if you never plan to kill a bird they won’t like the idea of you training a dog...

Re: No Interest in Birds

Thank you for all of the advice. I think I'm kind of stuck until I have some time to build a pigeon loft (hopefully soon). I have made a few homeade traps and set them around areas I've seen pigeon activity; hopfully these will supply some results in the mean time. I also tried contacting a racing p...

Re: new with lab question

At 4 months old your pup is entering adolescence, and will gradually begin to question your authority...like a teenage kid. That's okay. Just don't put your dog in a position to refuse commands. Keep the dog on a check cord or rope when you let her out for a while, and don't give commands you can't...

Re: Winter schedule - anyone use a treadmill??

Also, one of his favorite toys was a laser pointer. He'd chase that thing around the yard after dark like crazy. All of these activities were done for short periods of time. I know this is an old thread but I was doing some searching and ran across this. It would seem that a laser pointer would cau...

Re: DIY Piegon Trap

I made a much less elaborate pigeon trap and used a wire coat hanger for the bobs. Just an idea.

Nice work, I'm interested to see your success. What was your final total cost?

Quail Launcher for Pigeons?

Is the main differance between a quail and bird launcher the size? Will a quail launcher work for pigeons? I wanted to attempt to convert a manual launcher into a remote launcher but Wanted to do it at a low cost in case I completely screw it up! I was looking at this launcher , does anyone have any...

Re: No Interest in Birds

Thanks for all of the advice and reassurance. I have stumbled upon some convey's but my typical training field isn't teeming with wild game birds that's for sure. I think my best bet will be pigeons; until I can get a loft built I'm going to try my hand at trapping and I'll see how it goes.

Promoting Wild Bird Populations

I’m just curious if anyone does anything to promote bird populations in their training/hunting fields. I’m talking along the lines of planting artificial guzzlers for quail or planting food/seed.

Is it worth it and what are your methods?

Re: Thought for a new topic/category

I know I'm new to all of this but I think there should be a whole category devoted to pigeons and pigeon keeping. It seems like anyone who wants to be serious about pointer training also needs to be serious about pigeons.

Re: No Interest in Birds

Thanks for the reassurance Ezzy,

As far as formal bird introduction goes; is something along the lines of this video a good way to handle it?

Prior to the first introduction/release should the dog be all worked up and excited about it?

I appreciate the advice and guidance.

No Interest in Birds

My pup is about 6 months old now and I’ve yet to formally introduce her to birds since I don’t have a loft and I’m currently working out a plan to get a steady supply of pigeons through a loft or trap. I do take her on walks in the field and she just runs around and seems completely ignorant that bi...

Re: New to training gundogs...

I’m new also; I’ve been training a pointer for a few months now in basic obedience and I’m just starting the pointer training. My number 1 tip would be to be patient in training and try not to overdo it; make sure the pup fully understands one command before building on it. Also what I wanted as a n...

Re: What kind of GSP mix?

I came into a ¾ GSP/ ¼ Lab pup this previous fall. My purpose for getting her was to be a backpacking companion and I undertook the burden of obedience training myself and loved it. Once she had sit, down, stay & heel down I found myself looking for a new purpose of training so I started looking int...
