Re: Rabbits and feather
My first GWP, now 13 and mostly retired, has always been crazy for rabbits. He is also the birdiest dog I have ever known. I was always of the mind that bird dogs shouldn't chase fur. I tried everything to get him to ignore rabbits, but he would follow you through heck for a bunny. In retrospect, I ...

Re: Best state for bird hunting?
isonychia, For me its the Quiet Mountains of North Central Pa, where we have a lot more than just bird hunting. Potter/Tioga County is still one seriously large wilderness, Grouse, Bear, Deer, Elk, and Pheasants with a serious part of the Woodcock fly way, great Fly Fishing for Trout, Bass and othe...

Re: Dog picture taking
Great pictures everyone. It is hard to get dog pics in the thick covers we hunt for grouse and woodcock in NE, and we NEVER get the scenic vista shots while hunting. Fun to see your covers. May I piggyback on this thread and ask if there is a trick to posting pics? I can't seem to attach them as the...

Maine.
Grouse (Pah'tridge), woodcock, puddle ducks, sea ducks, stripers, tuna, deer, moose. Most everything a man needs.
Good seafood and beer too.

JKP,

Right on the money. As a group, shouldn't all of us that hunt with dogs stick together?

Re: Day of feather and fur
Baileydog, If you are even still following this thread. I am curious as to what you mean by your statement. Are you suggesting that a dog that runs fur can not handle birds as well as one that does not, and thus is like your pointing lab example, or are you saying that given to identically talented ...

Re: Puppy question
Does this assume he knows "heel?" He doesn't. Isn't it a little early to teach him that? I am willing if he isn't too young. He is a very smart pup.

Puppy question
I have a 13 week old GWP male. He is a very dominant, bull of a puppy. We want to get him as much exercise as possible, and that includes a lot of walks around the neighborhood. Sometimes this is alone, sometimes with our other dogs. He is always on leash during these walks. He tends to pull against...

Is there a difference between the wonder lead and the lariat/rope thing they sell in tractor supply that looks exactly like it?

Range
This ought to start a debate. I am curious as to whether range is mostly born with a dog or taught or conditioned. To what degree can it be influenced? How and when can you begin to get an idea of your dog's natural range? How much does it change depending on cover? If your dog hunts mostly in open ...

Re: Do all game birds smell the same?
The dogs can definitely tell the difference. I have always wondered how dogs keyed onto game bird scent more than non-game bird scent and when this distinction happened. Humans, after all, decide what is a game bird. Can a woodcock smell THAT different from a robin? We raise chickens, and my dog has...

Re: Pointing dog advise
BaileyDog, Its not you. Give the people on this site a chance to throw around some breed snobbery and we can't resist. It is all (almost) good-natured though. It really does ultimately come down to personal preference. If you do a lot of duck hunting and want your dog to retrieve, you might want to ...

Re: Is it the nose or is it genetic?
Mario, Absolutely no criticism intended my friend. I was just offering a different perspective. If style is that important to you than that is what you should concentrate on. I was not suggesting that flagging was a desirable trait, just that it would be way down on my list of problems in a one year...

Re: Words of Wisdom
I have only trained a couple of dogs, so I am basically a beginner. Train with a group. The best thing I ever did was to get together with people who knew more than I did. Be it NAVHDA, a retriever club, whatever. There is no short cut to wisdom, and someone who has trained dozens of dogs is going t...

Re: pigeon crap
We have chickens and have used the poo as fertilizer. It works very well but as others have stated it is VERY high in nitrogen and can burn your plants. I put a bunch in a container with water and make a "tea" as my grandmother used to call it. AKA Chicken poop soup. Use it sparingly, maybe once or ...

Re: Is it the nose or is it genetic?
Mario, I have to tell you, I bet most everyone on this site would gladly take that dog off your hands. At one year old she has had daily wild bird contact, and you have shot many limits over her. You can tell what animal she is pointing by her posture, and she is smart and steady. I will respectfull...
Re: NEW PUP
I agree with the other posters. You will make mistakes, but don't worry, you won't ruin him (unless you are abusive and if you are looking for advice here, you probably aren't). My first dog taught me more than I taught him. don't get stressed and enjoy the process.

Re: Wesslpointer-The Future of Dogs
I'm with Dave. Who is this hurting? If the guy wants to start a new breed and other people want to hunt with them, whether they call it a new breed or a mutt, who cares? As long as he is being honest about it and the dogs are well cared for, and people enjoy hunting over them, what difference does t...

Hi, I am brand new on this forum and no expert, but this really sounds to me like a cry for attention/exercise. Everyone who has posted here is right about the training, and then the enforcement with the collar. However, it sounds like he already knows what you want (since he knows to stay away when...
