I pay $10 for every pigeon I purchase and when training I expect at least 1/2 to fly away. I would love to get birds for $3. That said, I would start contacting the sellers before the auction and buying them before auction. Don

OK, that makes sense. I have never used a trainer but as a dog matures his personality will change. I bet it will change and you will notice the change because you won't be with him 24/7. I would not worry to much. Don

I agree with Doc on starting pups real young. I start on quail and pigeons with the pup just looking at them through the wire and progressing as the pup indicates readiness. By 12 -14 weeks I would expect them to be attempting to handle live, running, quacking ducks with aggressive eaze. guyjoseyduc...

Ring Neck Doves may be Illegal to transport live and release in the wild. You would be advised to check with your local F&W agent........I know in some places they are considered an invasive species. Don

Some good advice here..... I think lots of dogs are collar ready at about 16 weeks, on the very basic commands, if you know how to use a collar. Learning to use a collar on a young pup is maybe not a good idea so you be the judge. Don

Guess you know you need to beef up on your basic OB. Teach them "Down", I use a single long whistle blast, and then "Heel" after you hook up the leash. Can't believe it took 30 hours to catch them. Man, I would have been a wreck...Don

The check cord or the e-collar with "Here" will take care of that victory lap
FF will get her mouth in order.

I have experience with the DT Systems 1820+H20. Used it for about 3 years, had trouble with it for about 6 months not delivering corrections at a stable level. Got it repaired, took about a month to get it back, Repair cost and shipping was about $75.00. It still sits in the box they shipped it back...

I have had Rock Doves, " barn pigeons" hatch and raise in the winter months here in coastal Alaska where our temps dip to well below zero F. Never used any heat source yet and the boxes are inder the roof in an open pen. Just getting started with Homers. Not seen the Homers clutch yet in the winter ...

You need to have lots of birds to train a bird dog, at leaset that is my opinion. Raising birds is a pain in the butt but if you can't buy them, then thats the only way. I like pigeons best for the fly ability and cause they are cheap. Quail are cheap but don't fly worth a darn. Chuckers are better ...

If you think your dog is already gun shy I suggest you send him down to Perfection Kennels and have Jon and Cindy Hann work him up. They are next door to you in Missouri. Just a thought.
Another option, get their Perfect Start DVD set. It has a real good part on introducing your pup to gun fire. Don

How far is far and how do you measure the distance? I have no idea, but we run rivers allot and I swear, I believe when the breeze is slite, cool, steady and blowing down stream, my lab and DD can smell a pair of mallards at a very far distance, like a 1/4 mile or more. Moose or bears, even farther....

How does " The only real trouble i have is he wants to drop the dummy at my feet cant get him to hold it, if he drops it say 3 feet from me I can tell him no and he will bring it right to me. but he will not heal and hold it in his mouth until i take it from him.Is there a fix? How much training are you doing? At four months things should be fun. Training can and does take place but it should be more about fun and less about perfect style and such. When you say he won't come to you, there is a reason. You should be his source of fun and games. Don

"Here" is "here", birds or not.......and the check cord will get him back. If you think an e-collar on a 5 month old pup is to soon, I happen to feel they can be on one around 4 months if ready, then keep him on the check cord. Can't have them running off unless you want him dead. Might go to a 100'...
