I have a rescued gsp who I have hunted with for the last 3 seasons mostly for quail and phez.He locks up hard on quail and does pretty good on the wild phez we hunt but yesterday we went to a club to train with a new friend of mine and used chukar. Upon approach he gave a very fast flash point then ...

Re: Was this the right correction.

Im glad to hear my pointer is not the only one. I like taking him anytime im in the field but I might let him s leep in untill quail season opens up. He really hates standing still unless there is a covey involved. He didnt seem to excited about the dove feathers in his mouth anyway. I spent alot o...

Was this the right correction.

After a long off season the CA. dove season opened up sep. 1. I took my two year old gsp out to bag a few birds. Most of our hunting has been quail and phez hunts with him on point or flushing upon command. Gunshyness has never been the slightest of an issue. However on our dove hunt I had him sit a...

Those wild pheasant are some tricky birds. My pup is still tracking the runners until the flush usually out of range. With more exposure I am sure our dogs will figure them out.

Re: 8 month old and e collar??

You never want to use the collar on a pup that young when chasing birds! (or rabbits IMO) only deer or roads. Also you need to just train him with the collar and introduce stimulation at the same time you use a check cord pull so ythe dog learns what it means, there is a lot of info out there about...

Took my 11 month old GSP out for some Quail hunting on public land here in Northern C.A. As soon as he got on the first patch of cover he locked up I assumed it was just a sparrow or other non gamebird as I really did not expect to find any Quail until we got off the beaten path. So I nonchalantly w...

Awesome story. My pup is still trying to figure out pheasant. He points but doesn't know why they run away. Chukar and Quail both sit still for him! Congrads on a rescue, if your feeling evil go hunt test or field trial him. I get the oddest looks from Judges and breeders when I tell them I have a ...

Re: Grouse flushing wild

IMO, it is not how many killed or if any are killed at all, it is how they were taken, one bird taken in flight over a proper point (by a dog you trained yourself) is better than 20 killed otherwise. The people who start hunting stories with how many birds they killed that day are missing "it". Wel...

The truck story is pretty simple. Hit black ice doing 45mph slid sideways for about 40yds went off the road and did one full rotation landing on the wheels. Kicked out the windshield and drove back down the hill in the snow.Brrrrrr

Ca. Phez hunt

I took my 11 month GSP out for his second real hunt today. We got to the field a little late so I was sure I would see hunters in the spot when I got there. But to my surprise there was nobody. If your from CA you know how hard Public lands get hunted and a late start is sure to hurt your odds most ...

Re: my dogs first hunt

Glad to hear you are getting out there. Here are a few tips I have picked up along my short journey in the gun dog world. #1. Never shoot a bird you dog flushes. This will lead to a flushing dog instead of a pointing dog. Just let the bird fly away. #2. This early in his career as a gun dog it is vi...

I used the dove just to get him using his nose, as soon as he tried to get it I let it fly away. Im not sure what kind of birds they were he was pointing at kinda look like dove with square tails. Not a game bird for sure.

Intro to Birds

I took Rock to a local refuge today to let him try to find a few Phesants. We headed into the wind on this semi rainy day. He began working his nose as soon as I cut him loose. First thing that jumped was a rabbit but Rock did not pay him much mind. Then we continued to work the field into the wind ...

Nice looking pup. Just a heads up.. there is a hunt test this weekend in Rio Vista and a field trial at Hastings island. I'm guessing they are pretty close to your location.
