Re: Purina Proplan sport 30/20 vs 26/16

Not necessarily. I would stay with a higher protein for an older dog unless there is a medical condition needing lower protein in the diet. This usually is 26% prot or better. Also use highly digestible proteins for these guys. The overall ash level of the diet can help tell you how digestible the p...

Re: Purina Proplan sport 30/20 vs 26/16

A higher fat food has been shown to increase a dog's VO2 max, even with out training being implemented, thus a higher fat food with a hunting dog should be fed starting at least a month ahead of training, if not year round. You only have 100% of a diet to play with, or 100 seats for everything; carb...

Re: protein levels vs final size

Some of both makes sense. You want a higher protein food for both training and in season to build up muscle and maintain it. you want a higher fat food prior to training to build the system up so it is ready for exercise as fat can have an effect to boost V02 max even with out exercise. Once into se...

Rule of thumb I use with any soft stool issue like you describe to discern between overfeeding and not being able to "handle" a certain food, i.e., something in the food causes the dog to react poorly to the diet leading to soft stool is this; Reduce the food by half for 3 days and see if the stools...

You can always just biopsy the skin and see what the results are. Or try melatonin for several months to see if it is a seasonal hair loss issue.

Ash is the true filler in a dog food. Above that is the useless part of a dog food as a rule. Of course, you can have a lot ...
