Re: Hunting south dakota?
I, too have done the public hunting thing. The locals (the few that hunt) have their own places to go. The out of staters go through outfitters. Public areas are under hunted. Google South Dakota public hunting and a map will come up showing the areas. I personally like to find several in close prox...

My favorite artist is Terry Redlin. Last year I did a diorama of one of his paintings, "Comforts of Home". I sent him a letter and some pictures of it and I received a reply from his secretary. She told me that Mr. Redlin had been suffering from altheimers and wouldn't be able to comprehend my lette...

keep taking the dog for walks...you are on the right track.....allow the dog to explore, yet still maintain very passive control (at this young age) When the dog, gets stubborn, command here, quick tug, and start walking the other direction. When the the dog is 4 months old, begin putting on the pin...

work on one command at a time....I like to collar condition to here first. Have the dog on a check cord. Have the dog sit. Walk about 15 yards away. Command here, gently tug the cord. Your dog will comply because you have done your basic obedience. He's not really doing anything new at this point. D...

I ff my dogs on an 8 foot workbench. I have a cable above and use a tether (in the beginning) for more efficient control. If I was only ff one dog a year, I would not build a special table. Some guys ff on the tailgate of their pick ups. Some sit on a bucket.

I would put the bird away for now.....you achieved the exact response needed (a strong prey drive) Remember: very natural for retrievers to retrieve, but not so to bring back the bird to you...that will come with further training down the road....for now work on basic obedience....sit, here and thro...

Train your pup from the moment you bring it home, like others have said.....generally, just fairly passive obedience until 4-6 months old.....sit, here, heel, kennel, down, etc. You are shooting for 100% compliance over a period of time using mild corrections and very short sessions.....under minute...

improved cylinder...that is what my gun (Benelli M2 patterns best) A factory poly choke will not really lower a price of a gun per say, but they tend to have less market interest. An add on poly choke...you might as well keep the gun...you won't get much for it.

Get with a proven program (as others have said) Evan Graham's Smartworks series is very good. You are a long way from having your dog run blinds. There are several steps you need. Please quit trying to run the blinds. Look at this way.....your dog is enthusiastically running marks. When it comes to ...

more than likely he is teething.....check his gums for any soreness...meanwhile, I would suspend all retrieving.....take him for walks on a lead and work on basic obedience (heel, whistle sit, etc.) Lots of play time. I bet in a couple of weeks he will be good to go.

Harley and Abe are two of the finest labs of all time. The reason I say that is the number of titled offspring they have produced. Allow the kids to play with this pup all they want to. The pup will quickly figure out work from play. When the pup has a little more basic obedience, then talk to the kids and show them want you want. Let em be kids and let em be pups for now.

I personally believe you would be making a huge mistake by taking 14 week puppy hunting. There are way too many distractions, which could create major problems down the road. I understand that some people want to get there pup out hunting, but trust me, they will learn to hunt soon enough. I would s...
