Advise needed

I have a 3 year old English Setter who has turned out to be a really good dog in the field. Because of his bloodlines and ability I have not gotten him fixed in case I found a suitable female at some point in time when I want a second dog. Last week I went on a spring break vacation and I kenneled m...

Re: Pup started marking.

Thank you for the advise Rooster mom, We thougth we had the dog house trained until last week. He has never had an accident in the house. I'm going to assume marking territory is not the same as needing to pee though. My neighbors on each side of my residential property have multipal dogs. I imagine...

Re: Pup started marking.

My 11 month old male setter is doing the same thing. He got the christmas tree last night (it is a tree afterall), my son's book bag last week and I have noticed places in my garage he has marked as well. We went for a walk in a local park early one morning this week and he marked every tree he walk...

gun training

I have just had two great weeks of bird introduction with my 9 month old setter. I saw a big improvement from week one to week two, and I haven't been disaapointed with either session. Anyway, during my next couple of sessions I'd like to introduce gun fire with my .22 cal starter pistol. My questio...

Trainer

I have received a recomendation on a local trainer and I'm now seriously considering sending my 7 month old setter to him for 3 months. I'd like some advise to a couple of questions. Is 7 months a bit young for a trainer? I would like the training to start and be completed before this hunting season...

Re: update

Thank you for all the feedback. In response to brad 27's question about books, dvds and resource I use. I use "The Complete English Setter" by Davis H. Tuck and the "Gun Dog" dvd based of Richard Wolter's book. I also use this website as well. I think my biggest worry is the pace at which dogs learn...

update

I posted as a new dog owner and trainer about eight weeks ago regarding my english setter. My post covered what was going well and not so well in our training. Here is where we sit today. Overall, our family has created a great bond with our setter and if we were interested in a family dog only we w...

Re: pinch collars

Knine,
I think I'm doing the right things with my turns in my yard work. Everything taught in the yard goes out the window when we leave the yard. I'm guessing practice makes perfect.

pinch collars

Who uses them for teaching heel?
My young dog really wants to pull while we walk. Would introducing a pinch collar be the best fix?
If so what are some techiniques?

pond water

Has anyone's dog experience cases of diarrhea after drinking pond water? I'm guessing some of the retriever owners might be able to help me here. My pup made a huge mess in his create last night and his diet has not change to our knowledge. The only thing I can think of is the pond water he drank wh...

I'm an hour from N KC. I passed on the homers in Gardner because they would only be used a time or two. I'd drive a hour or so to get some birds. I'd appriciate any leads if you can help.

Maybe I could pass a homer as a morning dove? There is a thought? :)

Planning Ahead

I would like to introduce my 14 week old setter to birds in the very near future. To this point finding birds available in my area has been very difficult. If I'm able to find some I want to be ready. One small problem is that my home owners association doesn't allow pigeons. Therefore, homing pigeo...

check cord

I'm curious if anyone has advise on the best ways to run a young dog on a check cord. A young dog will often get tangled. How much control should you give the pup? Should you let him run and explore and use the cord to stop him when necessary or do some of you use the cord to guide and lead the dog?...

Re: Progress on 1st dog the good and bad

Joe, We have a couple of toys he does like to play with, and he would rather play tug of war than retrieve. This was one of my reasons for concern, he seems to have a very hard mouth and the wing eating episode got me alarmed. I'm more at ease now that most on the board describe this a puppy behavio...

Re: Progress on 1st dog the good and bad

Thanks for quick advise. Sounds like I need to back off my expectations for now. I do feel we have more positives than negitives. The crate training and socialization have all gone better than what I have expected. When we had our visit from the fox we were not aware of him until morning. It was the...

Progress on 1st dog the good and bad

I've owned my English Setter now for 4 weeks and we have been working on the basic commands in the yard and we go out for big runs in the field now and then. The dog has very good bloodlines and is 13 weeks old. This is how I assess my progress with him so far. Please let me know your thoughts on wh...
