Hunting vests or Jackets with hydration
Looking into carrying more water than just a bottle. Any thoughts on what works well? I am considering a camelbak system with 100oz capacity or possibly a hunting vest with built in water bladder. Please let me know what your experience has been, and recommendations. Thanks. P.S. Primarily for train...

I note the speed but really appreciate being able to see the dogs patterns. Also found it interesting to see my "closer working" dog puts on as many miles as my "bigger running" dog. They just do it differently.

Re: Breaking on Flush?
I let my dog break on the shot now. Steadiness during flush sure pays off when you have hens get up, your dog doesn't chase and then the late Rooster gets up. I have also broke my dogs to wing / shot /kill and found that to be nice as well. If you then let them break at shot during hunting season it...

I just replaced my laptop and can't seem to find the "fieldtrialforum" website I had, in addition to the gundogforum.com web site. The other website had a little different dogs that were usually for sale, and a little different discussions. Any help on this is appreciated. Thanks

Re: But wait ... what would you pay?
Reminds me of years ago when I was contacted by a "friend of a friend" to see if I would guide them on three days of pheasant hunting. They offered to pay me $100/gun for three of them. I declined the offer, because I didn't want to get pay per hunt started in my area. Wanted my G-kids to be able to...

Tony, the best Pheasant dog I ever had was never trialed. She didn't have tremendous foot speed, but she didn't miss many Pheasants that were in her area. Also my first true bird dog. The remainder of my dogs hunted and trialed in NSTRA. The "non trial dogs" deserve to be recognized too. Good post.

I will be interested in what people have to say. I am in the process of starting my first pup by having them point, but then not letting her chase on flush. I have always let them chase, when they were young, until I was ready to whao break them.

I go with the 870, because of the sentimental value it can have for your son. Later he will be able to say he started with the same gun his father did. Either gun would serve the purpose for shooting.

Training paid off in real world pheasant hunt
My 2 year old GSP made me proud today. I had her steady to wing , shot, kill going into Iowa Pheasant season. Decided to let her break on "kill" to retrieve more wounded birds. Today, Belle, went on point in some fairly thin yellow grass. I moved in and a hen got up - she stood to the flush, another...

Hunting and then trialing. I enjoy the time spent with friends hunting and trialing. The dogs have enabled me to meet great people from all over the USA and other countries as well. I do spend more time training if I am going to trial a dog, and that is a good thing.

I have seen some dogs that didn't get any "bird dog" training until they were quite old, for one reason or another, end up doing really well. If anything, I am guilty of pushing them along in training too fast. It is worth a try in my opinion, and I hope you are pleasantly surprised.
