Re: eastern montana? where to start?
This mapping program from MT FWP gives you pretty much everything you need. Public land, BMA's, Upland enhancement areas, where you'll likely to find each species. Also, if you have a gps look into getting those maps that show the public ground. Some areas are marked, some not, using the gps makes d...

Re: East side on Montana to Hunt 1st week of Sept.
Lots of public BLM land to hunt. Block management is private landowners that allow hunting by signing in with the landowners. Sometimes right at the field with a sign in box or you can reserve them, depends on the type. Start here: http://fwp.mt.gov/hunting/hunterAccess/ Look into the block manageme...

Re: Great Lakes Wolf Hunting
This is how they do it in Mongolia. Go this in an email a few years ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re644qgnCtw&feature=related Some ranchers took this wolf in eastern MT this year because it was killing livestock, they also happened to get a coyote the same day. The wolf weighed in around the 1...

Great looking dog. I worked in Garmisch for a couple of winters as a ski instructor, beautiful country. I didn't speak any German either, but I was 21 and only needed to know one important word "Bier" :D What about the Czech Republic for hunting? Is it any easier? Seemed like they might be more acco...

Check out Tom Dokken's retriever training book. It gives approximate time lines for introduction to gun fire, birds, retrieving..ect. I found it helpful for being a first time dog owner so I kind of knew what I should be working on, but every dog is different so it doesn't have to be exact.

Re: Conrad, MT or Great Falls, MT Area
Its terrible here i wouldn't do it. :D For about $85 you can get your deer, elk, bear, fishing and upland bird licenses. Montana has great hunting all across the state. Tons of public land and access to private through MT block management program. While I haven't hunted birds up there Great Falls is...

Yukon, I've been dealing with the same things you have been. Basically did the same searches ect. Ended up using the Costco feed as it seems like there wasn't much if anything bad said about it. Could have sworn the Science Diet I was feeding him before was rat poison after reading some of those sit...

My parents live in Bowman, sounds like they are seeing decent bird numbers so far. They had a bunch of rain early this year that kept farmers from planting all their crops, down about 10-15% around there.

Also is anybody out in MT how do the sharptails look this year. My guess is with all the water they had this year the habitat is great, but broods may not have come off until later. I'm headed through there in 2 wks on my way to my kids hockey camp in ND, I'll let you know what I find out. I'm not ...

Re: Timberwolves - good or evil?
I had another experience in Idaho where one of my shorthairs went out of sight for a few minutes. I was hunting on horseback and rode over to a ravine and found the shorthair playing cat and mouse with a coyote. The coyote was slowing drawing the shorthair up the ravine. I followed them up the ravi...

I'm usually just a lurker on here, but couldn't resist not commenting on this. We did the lower Salmon last year to Hellers Bar on the Snake at the beginning of October. When you can combine whitewater rafting, fishing and bird hunting it doesn't get much better. Here's my two cents: Rafting: There ...
