Now living in Montana

Well we are now living in Montana. I sure have missed wild bird hunting. It was great to get out this weekend and shoot a few Huns and Pheasants. There sure is a lot of land and terrain to cover.

Heck I don't look at FF as a bad thing. Everyone acts like it is a last resort. For myself FF is just part of training. I don't consider it "if I have too". It is a part of training and all my dogs go through it. Many of the Retriever folks FF all of their dogs, and those breeds are bred for retriev...

Jim, isn't it funny how you know when something is bound to happen. Good instincts. I always just FF all of my pointing dogs. If the dog isn't completely what I want after hunting, I can sell it as a finished dog.

Re: crunchin birds all of a sudden

Depending on how your FF methods, I would be very careful of using an e-collar the same way I have seen them used on labs during FF. For pointing dogs, you want to FF them manually the entire way, and then you go back and introduce the e-collar.

There "here" command will most likely not work. You will need to have him FF, and I would shoot anymore birds until that is done. The only thing that will help after the FF, and if he still eats the bird is to "help him eat it." You shove it down his throat until he wants to spit it out, and hold it...

If I catch a dog sitting in the field while there are birds to be found,....... well lets just say he gets to "re-home". As far as pointing goes, I can get a German Shepherd or an Aussie to point with some training. Just because a dog points, doesn't mean it is a POINTING DOG. So if you mix a Poodle and a Pointing Lab. Is that a Pointing Labradoodle which is hypoallergenic? I would take a GSP, Brittany, Pointer, or Se...

I have more success with not calling in late season. The time ducks get to Arkansas, they have heard all kinds of duck calls. Sometimes being quite and letting em work the decoys works. The is a genetic tendency for certain dogs to be "noise shy", and they are born that way. Definately correct in not testing to see if a dog is "noise shy" and make them "gun shy". You might need a stronger heat lamp, and you can point it straight down. The temp only needs to be in the 90's in a small section of the box. That way the female can get away from the heat.

When you are to that point, then you can start your FF program. As for always following the other dog, she is no...
