Re: Big runners and heavy cover
I generally am not concerned with having big range. I feel it as a good thing. Once you have a dog that will stand its birds as long as it takes you to get there, your good to go. I have a dog that is often over 800 yards quail hunting. He is a covey finding master. It may take me 20 minutes to get ...

The Garmin units are very good. I have had them for years. But the biggest benefit is likely the level of safety it provides for your dogs.
Most people would pay way more than the cost of the system to get their dog found when lost.

I will get out a couple time in the early season with my setters on PC. I only hunt them over pointing dogs and feel that its is likely the pinnacle of dog work getting a mature bird pointed and shot. As the early season gets farther along. They are in shorter grass than you would hunt pheasants. If...

I saw my first brood of quail chicks for the season yesterday. They were just big enough to fly about 50 ft.
Dogs have to be run year around, and I am lucky enough to have my own place to run them. But I make a effort to keep the dogs out of the quail areas this time of year.

Nice video! Having dogs on point at several hundred yards is not unusual for many of us. Our dogs will stand birds for as long as it takes for us to get there. Birds like BW quail, Sharptail, PC will stay put a long time if the dog handles them well. Pheasants and some of the desert quail will run o...

I have e-collars and had Astros and now the Alpha. If you are training one dog at a time the Alpha will do that well. You have 3 buttons you can preset. If you are training and want to switch between dogs quickly without looking at the unit, you will be better off with a dedicated e-collar in my opi...

They will need to stand off the bird enough they the birds do not flush. Most dog learn pretty quick that they can't crowd birds.
Don't know that there is a lot that you can do, other than maybe put them on some birds in launchers and launch the birds if they crowd them at all.

Re: 10 month English setter question
How much bird exposure the pup has had is more important than the age, to a great extent.
A 4-5 month old pup that has been out running and on birds, I would expect more out of than a dog that is a year old and is getting its first exposure to birds.

The dog has got to be hunting with you. Indy has been trained to turn and come back on the tone on the collar. But a dog has to be honest on its birds if you are going to let them range out of sight. On a windy day, a dog at this range could not hear a yell or whistle. I always like to have at least...

They are not much help at distance or on very windy days. They do not provide the safety features for the dog that a Garmin provides and I feel that they damage a dogs hearing over time.
