Re: 4 yr old GSP- defiant/aggressive behavior
You've been given some solid advice,... Here's my take... Nothing belongs to the dog...nothing. Your food bowl, your dog food, your toys. You ALLOW him to use them. Own them. Be the alpha. This dog needs a master, plain and simple. MAKE him wait for everything...his food, his toys, everything. Be t...

Re: A question on tapping a dog's head as "Fetch" is given
The theory I've heard (and practice) for tapping the dog's head is the same as intermixing their name with fetch. At some point, you can release with just their name, or just the tap. A "silent" fetch, if you will. Great for trials if you don't want to potentially screw up a brace mate's honor, espe...

Re: Bad trip to the vet
Any updates? Remy had the same thing (puking a bunch, not the heart deal) at just over a year old, and it would up being two big pieces of sock stuck in his gut. No bueno! But at least it was remedied and now he's a healthy, happy 3 year old.
Good luck with your dog. I'll keep you in our prayers.

Netflix mostly. We got rid of our cable. Couldn't justify the expense. Got an antenna for the local channels, and spend $9 a month for Netflix. Saves us about $1,200 a year.

Dogs are programmed to eat and eat and eat. Survival instinct, I reckon, dating back to their wolf ancestry. Remember: Dogs aren't people. We know when we're full (well, some of us do more than others). By and large, dogs do not exhibit the same trait. If they were "full" off 2 cups, and you gave th...

My breeder banged pots and pans together during feeding time to get the pups uses to loud noises. I continued that when Remy came home. His intro to gun went very smoothly. I've heard similar stories from others, as well.

I say go for it if you feel it's ready. I ran my pup at four months and hunted him from September through December. One of the best choices I've ever made. Just make sure you properly introduce the pup to gunfire, and work on basic obedience in the meantime. Have a dog who recalls well and is somewh...

One obvious thing to take into account is simply expense. Heck, even if they had the time, they'd spend more money just traveling for the trial than...

I'd be wary of putting anything soft (i.e. that shirt) in the kennel with the pooch. It might not care too much about it now, but when it does get to gnawing, look out. Totally dependent on the quarry: Pheasants: Limit is on three, and a hunt can last anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Depends a lot on the hatch, the cover, and the time of year. Ruffed grouse/Woodcock: I've never shot a limit, so hunts last all day. Usually start in the morning around sunrise...
