Re: Dog beds and kennel bedding
For outside in the dog house hay can't be beaten, for inside (and outside on the deck in the spring/summer/fall) Karunda beds are very good.

Re: Coyotes and Birddogs.
We have lots of them around here, the dog has had a couple scraps but nothing major. My buddies GSP got into a scrap with a pack of them in the compost pile a while back, he killed two of them right there and was chasing down a third when my buddy got him to recall. I always carry some slugs and a f...

I've had the TT bark limiter for a year, the dog wears it very regularly, replaced the battery once, works like a charm.

Re: Is your breed the best?
Like others have said, my breed is best for me. I hunt a mix of grouse, woodcock, rabbits, geese, ducks and big game. A Pudelpointer is what is best for me, as it points feather and fur well, retrieves all game like a pro, and blood tracks.

I'd play fetch a little with it so he understands it's something fun and to be retrieved. I have seen the dogs of several accquaintances who when first exposed to them for the first time as a hidden object or even as a marked fall look at it as if to say "What the????" and ignore it. Once they make ...

My guy is ambidextrous, it could be either front leg on birds. On fur it's most typically a rear leg. I don't know why but it's pretty consistent, it's nice to know what he's on before I go in for the flush.

Has he been wormed recently? How much excercise does he get? Many people overestimate how much padding a dog should have. A hunting dog in good condition should look like an Olympic athlete, a dog in great condition should look like a competitor in the decathlon. A photo would help a lot to see if f...

Other than depredation control, I can't think of any good reason to shoot a fox.

Ther reality is, short of winning the lottery, not having to work is merely a fantasy, however there are lots of jobs out there that pay decently and avoid the 9-5 rat race if you look for them. As others have said, blame the parents and the home life, not the schools. Often schools and standards have slipped as a result of parental intervention on behalf of the kids. It's not the solely the job of the school to install work ethic, respect, a sense of responsibility and a desire to do well ...

Re: Does anybody hunt ducks anymore?
This season I'm so far around 75% waterfowl hunting. I tend to gravitate towards the marshes, where there are few to no other hunters, and having a reliable dog is essential to recovering birds. I try to only shoot ducks that are committed to the decoys, however I'll admit to occasional pass shootin...

I use treats for teaching come. I find the one thing that my dog will do backflips for, and use it ONLY for recall. Initially he gets them every time, then slowly they get cut back, but I never cut them out 100%. I find it helps a lot.

Wolves live in dens??? While their pups are whelped and raised in dens, that's the only time they live there. Don't get me wrong, I crate my dog, and am happy for it containing him, but it's not a "den".birddog1968 wrote:Wolves live in small close dens underground.... .

I know your neck of the woods, and I'd go with either 1) a Pudelpointer or 2) a Drahthaar before a GSP. Both have better coats for water work, and tolerate the cold much better. These are of course generalizations, there are always exceptions to everything.

You should try and time it right, like others said so that it doesn't interfere with hunting season. More seriously though the spacing of the baby and a puppy can be somewhat challenging. I got my PP when my youngest was 6 months old and eldest was 2 1/2. It was INSANE to say the least. I'm suprised...

It may sound hokey, but a houndsman I know gives all his dogs organic apple cider vinegar on their daily food. He claims he hasn't had a tick in years. I've been trying it on my pup, and havent found one on him yet (fingers crossed).

I do both, and like each for different reasons. Hunting with a buddy is always fun, and the comradarie is great, but there is the issue of having witnesses for your bad shots. I enjoy solo hunting for the solitude. After spending the better part of two decades in EMS and several years doing SAR, I'v...

Pudelpointer, because I am a foot hunter, and hunt a mix of waterfowl, big game, bunnies and upland. He's the right breed for all of the hunting I do. He's a machine in the bush, but good (well, sometimes anyways, he's just turned a year) with my girls.

I have a GunX 209, and my buddy has a .22 of some sort, and the 209 is far louder than the .22. 209s are cheaper than dirt, I buy mine by the 1000, and it's very cheap, I don't think that I paid more than $30 for my last batch. That's 3 cents per shot.

Re: What is a "hot feed"?
"Hot feed" has a different context in some places. When we run hounds on deer, if the dogger is hungover, he usually parts with his breakfast somewhere on the first hill, when the dogs are still with him. They get to have a "hot feed" to start the day, thanks to the dogger.

People really have no idea when it comes to other peoples dogs. I had taken in a rather large intact 2y/o male Great Dane who was a rescue several years ago. He had a lot of baggage and hadn't been socialized at all before we took him in. When we were out for a walk on winter day, a couple of our "N...

One of the guys we use to deer hunt with had an Austrailian cattle dog that we'd let run with the hounds. He was a great dog, he'd go in and root out deer from places that the hounds would balk at.
