Sharon, Your ear rocks could be loose. I know this sounds like a joke, but I'm totally serious. I had this diagnosed with me by an ENT about 5 years ago and after going through his little head turning treatment and 12 hours of rest, I was fine. Yeah, I would say that my dog is 95% whoa broke. During yard work if I have her on whoa and then have my son try and get her excited (throw her favorite ball etc) she is steady 98% of the time. If she takes a step I give her a mild correction with the collar and she stops. Repeat the process and she...

My 20 month old pointing lab is collar conditioned and has lots of drive. I shot over 100 birds over her last year both chukar and pheasant and by the end of the season she was rock solid. The last few times I have had here out this year (including today) she is pointing, but then wanting to creep o...

Today was much better. I had my brother go with me and I was able to use a check cord on her. Only one of the five birds ran today and she stayed on whoa and watched it run. I had the CC on her, but didn't have to use it. My brother was able to eventually get the bird to fly. I really like the idea ...

What to do with runners
Preface:...98% of my hunting is done on a private club with chukar and pheasants. There are very few wild birds where I live, so wild birds aren't really an option for me. I went through the same problem last year with my 1 year old. I shot 50 chukar over her and she did great. Started hunting pheasants and she would point, but wouldn't retrieve. This might sound a little silly, but if you want a good bird dog, you have to work for it (or pay some one to do the work for you). Re: dogs + hardwood floors?
I recommend staying away from "real wood" floors with or without dogs. It will scratch and also requires a lot of maintenance. I would go with one of the new laminate floors. They look just like real wood, are very durable and will provide years of maintenance free service.

Let me try and add a little more clarity to the picture: 1. I hunt on foot and my dog quarters well usually about 50 to 75 yards out which is perfect for the type of hunting we do here. 2. I agree with what the others have posted, but would add one more thing. Keep her away from the other dogs for now while out in the field. She very well could be intimidated by the older more aggressive (towards birds) dogs. You might also try a pigeon in a small wire cage and just let the dog explor...

Do not shoot the flushed bird unless that's the way you want your dog to hunt. If there are plenty of birds where you're at, just keep doing what you're doing and only shoot the birds that are handled correctly. Keep your mouth shut and let the birds teach your pup. If you are limited on birds, I wo...

I'd definitely raise her housing up off the concrete. I probably wouldn't go with a crate, because it won't hold her body heat in. Put the gun away for now. Take her on daily walks in the field and keep your mouth shut. Let her explore and be a pup. I would back off on the sit and heel training for a few weeks and stop all retrieving too. Take the dog for lots of walks out in the field and don't talk hardly at all. Just let your pup be a pup, exploring and having fun. If possible, plant a pigeon or two for your pup to find while on your walks. ...

Too many people are trying to convince newcomers that puppies and birddog all require lots of time and work ot they will never hunt.
