Yes fires are good for a forest but the fires that are going on right now are hard to combat and in a fire that's good for wildlife there needs to be some things left..... These fires aren't leaving anything.... It's gonna get worse before it gets better

Hey no worries about rubbing it in. If I had a cabin in Michigan that's where I would be. I never did hunt there but I drove over that way so I could see where it was. If the weather ever changes around here in gonna check it out. That's rugged country over there.

Southern Appalachian Grouse Hunting

Well it's almost November and it's hot, dry and still lots of leaves. Grouse season is open and I've been a few times and moved a few birds. Just wandering if anyone else has been after them.....

There's not a lot of food this year, I bet they are in there somewhere. They might not be in there the way they used to but it' beats setting on the couch lol..... As long as there's one I'm going.....

I've been going after them..... Moving a few, there's not a lot of food this year or at least that's what I'm noticing where I'm hunting at.

if he's not too far out and you have a shot..... I say shoot and try to get the bird..... hunt during the season..... train during the off season....

I am no expert trainer...... I hunt rough terrain in the Appalachian mountains and if a grouses flushes wild or a young dog bumps a bird...... I'm shooting.....

I would agree moving 1-3 or even 4 birds in a hunt doesn't mean that there are a lot of birds.....in 2011-2012 I moved at least half a dozen birds most times that I went out and some days well more than that. I'm sure several factors went into that...mainly we had had 3 years in a row of a GREAT har...

I would agree that there is no true cycle, but there is natural lows in highs in the population. I too thought they were gone, but two years ago they were everywhere....at least in the area i was. So yeas this is a down year, but I know they can come back. I'm so sure of it that I bought another dog...

We have grouse down here, not in the numbers that are up North or in the Lake States, but they are here. Hunting them down here is probably as challenging as any upland hunting there is! This season they are down , but there are pockets and 2 yrs ago there were more birds than I had seen in 8-10 yea...

I think the appalachian grouse study took place at a WMA in SW North Carolina. Anyway, gotta get after them ...I have been buying a NC license the past few years...love it over there!

Appalachian Grouse

Just wandering if anybody in the southern appalachians has been out yet? I've been out a few times.....moved a few grouse and one woodcock. I haven't took a gun yet, but hope to do so soon!

I just want to say that I had a great time with 4shot this past weekend. The main thing I want to say is that this man has got ALOT of adventures to share. He has THRU-HIKED the A.T....and that in my book is an awesome feat. If anyone else invites this man to go hunting they will not be dissappointed.

I haven't stopped....still going. I'm still moving a few birds, but getting a shot at them is hard. Most of my birds are being found in the laurels this season...although I haven't been in a few days..I've been sick.

Well, we are coming up on Jan. really fast and for everyone who hunts grouse in the Southern Appalachians we are coming into the home stretch. No more bear hunters and deer hunters..I hope everyone gets to go, has good dog work, and is able to put a few on the ground for their dogs to get their mout...

Well I can't speak for West anMiddle TN., but there are grouse in huntable numbers and you can find woodcock from time to time in the high mountain valleys and an occasional covey of quail. I live in East TN. and hunt both N.C. and TN.

The quail aren't what they used to be, but there are still huntable numbers of grouse and from time to time you can move woodcock in the high mountain valleys...but you have to walk.

I cannot speak for the whole Appalachian range, but I have seen red or cinnamon colored grouse in the ones that have been harvested down thru the years and I have heard that those colors are found primarily in the Southern Appalachians..although I have no scientific proof...I guess things are just d...

Well after almost giving up grouse hunting ( I thought they were gone after 2008-2009 ) I decided to make it a honest go this year and just see if they were gone. I had hunted Jake ( my Llewllin ) sparringly the past couple of seasons with starting to miss it alot last Jan. He is 7 and I knew my win...

I will shoot at a bumped bird, one that flushes wild, or one that I put up...my dog is not perfect, but he handles the mountain grouse best he can. I am a little more disciplined when it comes to a young dog or someone else's dog. I hunt by myself most times and around here it's mostly about how man...

We have some snow coming down here in East Tn. It's not gonna amount to much, but could have 5-6 inches in the mountains..I love December!!
