Re: Quality Leather Pinch Collar

Thanks for the responses. That looks exactly like the collar I had. Much appreciated.

Quality Leather Pinch Collar

I'm looking for a high quality leather pinch collar for training. I had one I really really liked that I bought off of Bill Gibbons a while back and after a recent club training day, it grew legs. I'd preferably like to get the same one but I'm not sure where he gets his and he's up at camp for the ...

Re: new to gun dogs, advice needed.

For training I would suggest pigeons. You will get the same results when you go hunt quail. I have found this to be untrue. Pigeon do not sound, smell, or act like quail. Dogs being very associative will, can and have in my experience, taken steps back on new species. My brit needed additional work...

Re: South Dakota pheasant hunting 2012

Great shots and very successful hunt!

Mind if I ask the general area you were hunting in SD? Public or Private? You obviously saw plenty of birds. I'm heading up there mid November and would be happy with a fraction of your harvest.

Re: How and where can I get started with hunt tests

Yes, your dog will need to point. I just finished my pup's JH a few weeks ago. There is a thread here that has hunt test tips, it's got some good information. For organizations, I would start with the Setter club in your area. Talk to those folks to see if they have any hunt tests coming up or know ...

Re: MN Opener

If you're looking for a good camera for recording hunts I might suggest the GoPro line. They have a new model coming out in Nov that shoots 4k (Cinema Quality). So you could get the hero2 at a bargain or splurge on the 3. There are a couple of youtube vids of guys pheasant & duck hunting with them. ...

Re: Chasing Birds

roaner, I think you have plenty of reason to hang in there with this pup. Sounds like his genetics are good...sometimes the hard headed ones end up being the best dogs - once they get it!! How's his OB in general coming along? George Hickox talks about working on the range of dogs by placing birds ...

Re: Chasing Birds

Thanks for the insightful replies. I'm still going through some of the other threads here. I've had the pup from 7 weeks on with exception to the last 3 months. When he was about 12 weeks he was allowed to play with a locked wing pigeon one time and then gun broke. He has not caught a hobbled or oth...

Chasing Birds

I sent my dog to a trainer and after 3 months got him back last Friday. The trainer I picked is considered one of the better trainers in my area. After the first month the trainer had remarked that my dog was not pointing all that well and would try to rip the birds out. He also ran hard and would o...

Re: Ideas for hauling water

I have a 4 month old pup and when he sees the water bottle he goes in for a drink when he's thirsty and when he's not, he doesn't. I never have to force him. When it gets as hot as it does in AZ you learn things too. Like a dog will dig in his bowl instead of drink from it. If I have to carry more w...

Re: Advice on heel

I was told by a trainer I considered sending my pup to that I should not teach heel when the pup is young. His reasoning is that the dog would be afraid to leave my side when in the field. When should heel be taught?

Pup is currently just under 5 months old.

Re: BARKING...

I have used the Tri-Tronics bark limiter with good results. Although I have been told not to leave it on for more than 8 hours at a time. It's vibration activated by the vocal cords and has 5 levels for setting the correction. My pup barks at noises he can't see and we have a block wall so that's pr...

Re: A little about you...

I've got a 4 month old Brittany who I've introduced to quail but will ultimately hunt pheasants and grouse as well as quail when he's a bit older. I live in Cave Creek, Arizona and I hope to make some trips to South Dakota and Minnesota for upland birds next year. My pup got to see his first bobwhit...
