Re: Drive vs Cooperation

If the dog has the physical ability and mental aptitude to carry it 600 plus yards in the search for game you are going to need something more than just training going for you. exactly why i said both are needed... my point was, you cant put a 600+yd cast into a natural boot licker. but you can mak...

Re: Drive vs Cooperation

Straight out of the NAVHDA green book: Desire to Work The desire to work is the hallmark of a good versatile hunting dog, and this desire is expressed in every phase of work on land and water, from beginning to end. The dog must demonstrate that it wants to find game and is willing to work hard to t...

Re: Letting birds fly

They'll keep coming back until they find somewhere better to hang out... which you're giving them more opportunities to do. Also, if you're leaving your loft open all the time, you're asking for probs with predators (coons, hawks, etc.)

Re: Public Bird Dog Training Area in Central MD?

FYI, indian springs is available for sanctioned events only. IE, AKC trials, etc. They do not allow for public use without an event approval; McKee does.

Re: Public Bird Dog Training Area in Central MD?

check with the central office. they'll set you right quick. come to the training days to see what it's all about. get a retreiver training permit ($5) tacked on to your hunting license and you're good to go. as many of the guys here said, birds make a bird dog. that will be apparent at our training ...

Re: Seeking advice on transporting dog in back of truck

good advice here. topper will be best bet. get as many sliding/opening window options you can on the caps. I'd recommend ARE, and Leer brand caps. painting is relatively cheap if you find the right deal. save yourself some money and take the windows out yourself also. just a bunch of 1/4" screws hol...

Re: Newbie questions about selecting a gun dog breed

Here's my take (I'm a fellow Marylander): 1 - Pudelpointer - Look at NAPA for breeders. Plenty in the SE. (FL, GA, AL). http://www.pudelpointer.org/Breeders.html My uncle runs Tideview Kennels. I know several guys who have PP's in the south that do just fine. Check NAVHDA records on the breeders for...

Re: Hunting the Dakotas w/a pointing dog

I've hunted behind first year dogs out west and there's a learning curve for sure, but if you hunt the right spots and give them enough exposure you'll have no problem getting them to point wild birds. That's what makes it all worth it IMO. Call up fish & wildlife and get a plot map. check out where...

I talked to the garmin/TT rep at the Harrisburg sportsman show for a long time while i was up there this winter. he had alot of good things to say about garmin's new ownership. the jist i got was that the 'tube' style pro transmitter design was here to stay. almost all of the TT engineering folks ke...

Re: Bloodlines

Bottom line is when you breed for certain traits within certain lines as NAVHDA breeders do, the odds of producing the traits you are looking for are much better than just picking a puppy from anywhere and trying to train it for the traits you want. The reason I advised NAVHDA breeders to the OP is...

Re: Points too close for comfort

buy a launcher, it's the best thing you can do. if your dog can smell scent from farther away and won't stop, you're wasting reps and leaving the dog less confident in himself. at the first sign of the dog working scent and closing in, pop the bird. he will figure it out quick. you can also save bir...
