Re: First hunt tomorrow
Oh heck no. The little female in my profile usually weighs between 35-38 lbs. I've seen dogs during the hunting season weigh less than that.

I think legally you have to have bands on the quail if you are going to use them.

Thanks for the replies. I have started mixing back in the layer pellets and will continue to feed this. They seemed to do well on it. Hopefully they will start nesting soon.

Ok I only have 10 birds in an old round building about 12 ft in diameter. I got the corn free from a grain spill so maybe I will mix it with the pellets I have left.

I live in central Iowa. Is this the right time that my pigeons would be molting? I am seeing a lot of feathers on the ground and some of the birds seem to have lost some feathers off the back of their necks.

It doesn't get much sweeter than to let the dog out of the crate and have her take off up a waterway for 300-400yard then swing over and pick up a fence row and come down it for several hundred yards and meet you and the end of the fence. She has just covered maybe 1000 yards of cover and you have w...

Re: Anyone feed exceed from SAMs club
I normally feed the chicken and rice. On occasion they have been out of the chicken so I bought the lamb and I didn't notice any difference in my dog. Have only had one time that they were out of both and I had to by something else. My dog eats it well and does well on it so I haven't had a reason t...

Not being fully weaned may have been the problem. I feed every evening after work and the young birds seemed to be doing a lot of peeping and chasing the older birds. They would peck around on there own though.

feeding young pigeons
Picked up a few young pigeons this weekend and I told the guy I got them from that I had a couple of young birds die. Seemed to be eating well and then they just got weaker and finally died. He asked what I was feeding and I told him poultry laying crumbles 16% protien. He said he was told that was ...

Re: Are E-Collars really necessary?
I like to think of them as an "aggravation collar" I use a low enough stimulation that it is more like an aggravation than pain. Kind of like that little kid in the back seat saying"Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" You want to do what ever you can to get him to just shut up . T...

Re: Where there were birds
There are more predators than just yotes. Skunks Coons and Possums raiding nests is probably more detrimental than yotes catching adult birds. Bird dogs are hunting during the day when the birds are awake. Yotes are hunting at night when the birds are bedded down and asleep. I think for the last 4 o...

Any ideas why my homers have quit laying? They started laying early this spring and I had three or four different nests going all at the same time. Went from 8 birds this spring to 20 now but since the last pair of little ones have grown and are flying I have no more active nests. I cant think of an...

Benilli , Do your yard work. Get your obedience work down pat. If you can get your dog to mind his manners (come when called, whoa, heel ) in the field and in the house then his instincts should take over and the pointing part will come. If the dog has any kind of breeding at all with a few 15 or 20...

Re: NSTRA dog
First off. I have never ran a dog in a NSTRA trial but it doesn't make sense to me that the dogs learn to track the 4wheeler or horses. Maybe so in the first few braces but when you get to brace 12 or 13 that means the planter (whether on horse back or ATV) and the judges have made at least 36 trips...

Missy was the talk of the hunt test (some good and some not so good). I was proud as could be because she did some great things. Fou...

One way that might work to help your pup tell the difference between play time and training time is to use an object that you only use during training time. Maybe a different collar on the pup or you can wear you hunting vest or a certain cap. Maybe a certain time everyday for training. He will soon...

Sounds like maybe he is "collar wise" In other words he knows when he doesn't have the collar on there isn't much you can do. Try putting two or three collars on at the same time. Some times only one collar, sometimes three, sometimes none, Keep him confused as to whether he has the real collar on o...

Re: Who doesn't use bird launchers and why?
I use them because i don't have a helper most of the time. I live on 4 acres so I can come home from work and set the launchers out loaded with birds and then get the dog out and work her on them. The kids have all grown and the grandkids aren't quite old enough to be much help.
