Re: Place Command

When I do place, it is normally to kennel. I don’t care too much what they do in that place as long as they obey the command and stay there. If not released, they usually choose to lay down on their own in short order. It doesn’t take too long for “kennel” and “go lay down” to become interchangeable...

If you are diligent about working each dog individually and have the time, there is no downside as far as actual field training in having two. But having two young dogs around the house, or in the house can be tough. It makes it a bit harder to enforce what you have taught if they are not kennel dog...

I forgot to mention two things: 1) If you carry a tethered live pigeon in your vest, it works great as a puppy lure. When they are further than you are comfortable with, (hopefully more than 50 yards and growing), get the pups attention and put it in the air to flap around a bit and reel it in befor...

Re: Self hunting

Short answer, you should probably get a different dog. If quartering within shotgun range performance is what you are after, a GSP was a very poor choice. Perhaps a flusher would be much better suited to your desires, but even then, it would need a whole lot more time than 5 months to figure things ...

Garrison, I think the difference here is breed difference. For setters and pointers I have always told people that if they hold point (most well bred dogs naturally do this), come when called and know what NO means, they are huntable. However, this is not true of versatile dog's where they are expe...

13 weeks is pretty darn young to be worrying about losing a handle on a pup. I expect most of it is your worry, and less of it is the pup’s accelerator peddle. You may want to get to a more manageable field rather than the thick woods for your initial puppy time, and bird introduction. Get out and l...
