Re: Dove hunting with dogs

I use my GWP's for dove. I use a pop up blind for the dog. It helps to have an exact spot for them to come back to after the retrieve. Make darn sure you get them snake proofed. To help keep them cooled down, hunt over water, If your dog kennels when told and knows what whoa means give it a try. I o...

Re: 28 ga over a 20 ga

Aim small miss small. I shoot 28 w/26 barrels on blues, gambles and bobs. Year before last in SD i shot #6's with full and modified for three days and never missed having a 12 or 20. Last year in KS I bagged my first and second LPC with a 28g. What matters is that you have confidence in your talent ...

I would definantly try to teach the dog the "hold" command. I would start with bumpers and then add wings to the dummy. Once he is holding what ever you put in his mouth move to fresh dead pigeons.

Re: Some questions on Teaching Sit, Stay, Whoa etc...

I am in the process of training my third GWP in a 10 years span and all three are very different in personality. I've learned in over 20 years of training roping horses and cow dogs that, what works for some doesn't work for all. That is true with my bird dogs too. What is important with a puppy is ...

I hunted with a gentlemen years ago that fed his two pointers before we left out in the morning. He added something to their food that smelled awful and looked even worse. I remember it being a soupy concoction. I've always wondered what it might be. Do any of y'all feed something like that and why?

I took my girls for a quail hunt yesterday the temperature was in the high twenties low thirties. My dog Millie was the first out of the box because she gets very excited and and howls If she don't get to hunt. She was her typical self, all excited and ready to go. I've been to KS twice this year and had blast hunting with old friends and good dogs. We found very few birds. The best area we hunted was around Meade. We hunted WIHA that had Milo or Corn crops adjacent to or in the vicinity. Hunt the areas that are on the far edges of populated centers. Good chic...

Normally I am a very optimistic, glass half full kind of person. But I have spent two weekends in SW Kansas hunting hard wearing out boots and dogs all for a grand total of four roosters. Luckily we have seen more prairie chickens and bob white quail so that is a positive. The scariest part is that ...
