This is kind of dependent on the program you choose. A good stiff check cord in 20-25 foot a good leather collar

I'll second Training With Mo or Perfection with the Perfect Start and Finish. Once you pick a program stick to it and don't second guess your self or your dog. But most of all HAVE FUN with your dog

I use a stake out chain now. Because when I was at a trail last year I had a shorthair and pointer pull a chain gang out of the ground and get tangled up in the chain. I use the stakes your looking at.

I lost a dog 10 years ago and he still ain't home had a chip and I.D. tag on his collar and the chip tag on his collar. So I don't care much for chips but the up side to a chip is you can report the dog stolen with the chip company and if a vet scans it it will show stolen.

How many trainers are using the hands on method. Not hands on a check cord or lead actually hands on the dog for praise and correction not heavy handed discipline a touch to let them they did a good job or a slight correction when needed. Find a program that works for you and stick to it. At 13 weeks I believe that I would just take him to a short grass field and let him run. I would bet that the dog has caught a few birds and thinks it don't need your help to get a bird. You need to find good flying birds and start from there. You probley did a lot of hunting on hunt clubs and most people are going to rush and try to shoot birds for young dog.
