Re: Rescue a dog, will it hunt?

I can't say if you can likely get the setter to hunt or not, but I can tell you this much from experience. Setters in general, are one of the most "want to please" breeds I've ever seen. Many year ago, I took in an english setter that my uncle had. She was about 5 years old, completely untrained and...

Re: How to condition to E-collar?

Thanks guys. I purchased and read "Water Dog" and "Game Dog" long before I got my dog. I have also bought and viewed "Fowl Dog #1". None of them went into much detail about E-collars. Fowl Dog did a little on the collars, but I'd rather ask stupid questions and feel confident I'm on the right track ...

How to condition to E-collar?

I have a Boykin that just turned 1 year old. I've been training him sans e-collars, but just purchased a sportdog model to re-enforce commands. This is my first attempt at training a retriever, so I'm taking it cautiouly so as to minimize mess ups. I plan on using the e-collar sparingly...to firm up...

Re: E-Collar for Boykin Spainel

I got a boykin from the Boykin Spaniel Rescue back in November. He will be a year old in Feb. I initially decided I would not use an e-collar in training, but I recently changed my mind during a duck hunting trip to Arkansas. The guide had a lab that was well trained, but jumped the fetch command an...

Re: burn it or turn it under?

I'd definitely check with your local NRCS office for what your acceptalbe options are. For many of those programs, you will violate the agreement if you "turn" the soil.
Other than that, if burning is acceptable, I believe it to be the most beneficial method.

Re: Caution, very emotional

This is one I've always liked: A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead. He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for a number of years. He wondered where the road was leading them. ...

Re: Bringing my GSP indoors?

I had an english setter that was 5 years old when I got her. She was not house broken. She peed in the house exactly 2 times. Each time, I forced her noise in the pee and immediately took her outside. After the second time, she always came and got me. You must pay attention to dogs "signals' that th...

Re: Opinions Needed

I don't know for sure about being the "best", because that is a lot to do with opinion However, I just ordered "Water Dog" and "Game Dog", both by Richard Wolters. I know these books are highly regarded and always come up when someone asks for recommendations for training guides.

Re: Stressfull Day for Me & My Dog

We discovered the same thing about giving our dogs a bath. Get in the tub with them and they are MUCH more receptive.

Re: My Bad on Ivomec wormer

Thanks guys. I had no easy way to check the validity of what I was told. I've been useing the liquid mix myself for quite some years, so I wasn't coming from a lable recommendaton standpoint. I may have to check out the paste myself now!

Re: My Bad on Ivomec wormer

About the horse paste...someone told me that it could be dangerous and is not recommended for dogs. The reason is, the medicine may not evenly dispursed throughout the paste. For horses, it doesn't matter because they get the whole tube at once. But for dogs, one month, the dog may not get enough of...

New feller

Hey folks, I live in NC and work for Natural Resources Conservaton Service. I'm 47 and a lifelong hunter/fisherman. When I was young, bird hunting was the big thing. My dad and most of my uncles had bird dogs...mostly pointers. About the time I got old enough to be more than just a nuscience in the ...
