Re: Worried I picked the wallflower pup
Thanks for the imput, you guys are awesome! I would not mind a little more laid back dog, especially a gsp I'll observe a little more and go from there. If anyone else has any tips or advice on what to watch for it is welcome!

Worried I picked the wallflower pup
Hey everyone looking for some advice/guidance from those more experienced than me. We are getting a puppy from the litter that a friends female had. The parents are both field tested hunt certified, hips checked etc. He asked us to pick earlier than I would have liked so we didn't get to see the pup...

Quail call?
Was wondering if anyone knew where I could get an easy to use affordable bobwhite quail call. Doesn't seem to be much online, but I think it would really help in finding the spread out coveys in FL. Also any tips on calling bobwhites would be great.

Re: Puppy born snake smart?
Didn't mention it in the original post, probably should have,I did toss one of the headless snakes near him and gave him a couple good zaps. Felt bad doing it, but he doubled the distance he was keeping from it after that. Thanks to all who offered advice.

Puppy born snake smart?
Today I was out in the field here in FL with my springer pup. It was the coldest day of the year so far, (about 40 degrees lol). The pup was running around looking for birds, suddenly stopped and stepped back. I could tell it wasn't a bird, he just stepped back and stared. I went over to investigate...

Puppy and fireworks
Quick question, my pup is about 7 months old and has been gun trained/hunting for almost 3 months now. No problems at all with gun shots (which is pretty big accomplishment as he is a timid dog to begin with) How concerned should I be about the DA neighbors setting off fireworks and scaring him on N...

How to cook whole pheasant?
Just looking for some good recipes/tips for keeping whole or halved pheasants tender when roasting. Also has anyone tried doing them whole in the slow cooker? Or are the legs pretty tough no matter what?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Need help selecting first gun dog
Never used a started dog before, not hard to train a flushing dog, main thing is to get them used to the gun the right way and teach them to stay close. Lots of info online on training. The springer is a flushing breed to btw.

Re: Living in venomous snake territory
I know they are still around at cooler temps, especially in FL, I guess I am asking at what temp they are active and alert enough to strike.

Living in venomous snake territory
I live in Florida and was wondering, what is the magic temperature that you can stop worrying about snakebites. I haven't had the oppertunity to get a snake to "snakeproof" train him yet. I have been trying to avoid temperatures over 60 F (basically hunting for a couple hours starting at dawn) as I ...

When to Introduce Pheasants
I have a 6 month old springer spaniel who I have been training for 3 months now. We have worked with pigeons and quail so far, and this week he and I got our first 4 wild quails. (So proud! :D ) Which is great considering we live in FL and wild birds are hard to come by around here. He is bird crazy...

Best setup for pheasants please help!
Hello! Was just looking for suggestions regarding shells for pheasants. I am using an 870 12g as my gun. Can I use a 1 1/8 oz load or do I need to do a 1 1/4 high brass load. (Not so much fun shooting all day  ) Also what is the best shot size? I have been using an Imp Cylinder for quail local...

If you go springer make sure you get a field bred line and not show line, basically two different breeds

Question about pen raised quail
I bought seven bobwhites and was wondering if keeping them in a cage(about the size of a 50 gal aquarium) for a week would make them unable to fly. My puppy is a flusher anyways so I don't so much care if he catches them on the 2nd flight if I miss or whatever, I am just wondering if I will get at l...

Anyone know places Quail/Pheasant hunting Fl or Ga
I live in Daytona FL (Silly place for a bird dog I know lol) and am looking for a fairly inexpensive place to go hunt with my Springer pup. I prefer Northern FL or Southern GA, but anywhere in GA would do. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, just looking for a half day hunt with shots at plenty ...

Re: Getting pup used to gun
The trip to the gun range wasnt an immediate thing I started about a mile down the road and worked my way towards it over the course of a month or so. It was out of nessecity more than anything else as I live in a semi urban area.

Getting pup used to gun
I have a 5 month old English Springer pup and I am trying to introduce him to the sound of the shotgun. Problem is I am kind of a newb and only have 1 gun, a 12 g. So what I have been doing is bringing him down to the shooting range near my home and using clipped wing pigeons bringing him closer and...
