Re: "Buck" Rabbits
Grew up hunting and raising rabbits. A "Buck" rabbit was always a male rabbit. Never heard of a species referred to it. Guy learns something new every day. Regardless of what one calls 'em, they are a blast to hunt with a good dog.

Re: Reloading question
It boils down to how much you shoot and what you time is worth. I load for 9 handgun and 6 rifle calibers. My 2 sons and I shoot approximately 600 rounds of centerfire a month. While cost per round is less from reloading, we are shooting more rounds. Seems to be the norm...if you have $100 a month t...

Re: When is enough enough aggressive dog
On rare occasion for no real reason the male goes after female. This might happen once every third month or twice in one week then not again for 4 months. IMHO, this is not a case of random, for no reason spontaneous attacks. There is some kind of stimuli that the male is responding to, you just do...

Re: Training my GWP
@18 weeks if the pup is indifferent around a rimfire at close range, exposing it to a shotgun or centerfire at a distance should not be a problem. Having your young dog follow a deer/hog scent trail laid down to a reward works well for any dog intended to hunt them. Making it a game your dog enjoys,...

Re: Why do we lionize wild birds?
I've hunted wild birds where I have limited out before gettin' outta shotgun range of the truck. I have hunted preserve birds where it took all day and still did not find that last bird. Hard to say which was truly the better hunt for me and the dogs. Here in Wisconsin, the amount of wild pheasants ...

Re: Average Hunt Time For Your Dogs
I've found, if you know your dogs, work with them frequently before season, they will tell you the answers to your questions. Every Dog's physical condition as well as their stamina and desire to hunt is different and will change with age, ambient temp and terrain. Frequency of access to water to dr...

This is why they make underground and wireless fences. Makes for very short work training the dog to know it's boundaries.

Re: Buying first pistol
Finding a handgun to buy right now is harder than deciding on which one to buy. If you are not desperate, I'd wait till the demand is back to normal along with prices. I shoot wheelguns and bottomfeeders, and use different revolvers as my primary deer firearm. Most folks can cover the most bases wit...

Re: Introducing new person to hunting?
I agree. Not that you need to leave your gun at home, but using it should be reserved till she's had her chance on every bird. It be a shame for a cripple to get away or for the dogs to work hard all day for naught.shaneroyce wrote: when it's about them...it's about them.

Re: Holding point
My experience with grouse is that they generally don't hold long, especially after they've been hunted. Also, many times before they flush they will walk a few steps before they fly. Are you sure they are not already moving when your dog moves in? I would shoot at the flushed birds. The dog found th...
