Re: Best Upland Books
I really enjoyed Bob Wehle's book "Snakefoot: The Making of Champion". The book details his 60 year pursuit of trying to produce the best possible bird dog. I'm not a huge Elhew fan mainly because of where I hunt. But his experiences and breeding philosophy are pretty amazing

Re: Perfect pedigree site
The GSP Ancestry site has an impressive database if your looking for pedigree information on your Shorthairs. It shows the COI & ALC coefficients of each dog if your interested in that. It also has some information on known breedings and off-spring.

Re: Best Vest?
+1 on the Q5 vests. I bought the Q5 Rimfire this season and love it! It's just a little bit smaller than the Centerfire. You can tell the vest is designed by guys that do allot of bird hunting. It really gets the weight off of your shoulders and onto your hips, like a fanny pack. They're very well b...

Re: How much does training cost?
I also can't stress enough how comfortable you need to be able to cummunicate with your trainer. A lot of trainers are very good at comunicating with and training the dogs. Therefore people skills can be severely lacking.. This is a problem because after the dog is trained the trainer must then trai...

Re: Training with pen raised Texas Blue Scaled Quail
I use Bob-Whites because they seem to recall the best, survive the best in a JH, and are also the most economical. They also hold the tightest when working dogs. Starting in late April you can get day-old Bob White chicks for about $1.75/EA and then raise them to juveniles. Put them in the JH's 3-We...

Re: How much does training cost?
$500 - $700/month in Arizona. If your pup is only 10 months old he probably is only ready for a 1-month puppy clinic. That is where a trainer would work on basic things such as Here, introduction to birds and introduction to gunfire. You can do this pretty easily yourself. I would get a hold of a vi...

Re: Training with pen raised Texas Blue Scaled Quail
I've used Bobwhites (regular and Reds), Gambles Quail, and Blue's in a Johnny house. They will all recall if left in the Johnny house for at least 2-weeks before released. I think overall the Bobwhites seem to survive better and recall more often to the JH. I've also had pretty good luck with the Ga...

I agree that carriers can be bred to non-carriers in order to improve certain desirable traits that might not be as available in other lines. Like a previous poster stated, the Gambles quail around the Golf Courses and subdivisions are allot more tame and will let you get closer to them than they will in the wild. They do well in these areas because there's usually a constant source of food and water and not much pressure from other preda...

The NSTRA Trials will give you a very good opportunity to see all of the breeds your interested in do "their thing" up close. The dogs are competed in 30 min. braces with two dogs/brace. Re: in your opinion, which breed for a beginner?
The terrain you hunt, type of birds, and weather conditions are big factors that should influence your choice of dog as well. Will it be an inside family dog, outside kennel, backyard etc. Does shorthair or longhair matter? Also what are your expectations for the dog? Will you be doing any other act...

Re: Imitiation breeding.... AI/surgical implant
When a female is breed using thawed frozen semen it is usually done surgically or intrauterine. Either way the semen is deposited directly into the uterine horns. The sperm doesn't have to travel the normal distance it would during a live breeding. This is supposed to increase the chance of a sucess...

Thanks for the feedback KwickIrish and Saddle. Some of the other breeders I've talked have said the same thing. Brian, I wrote elsewhere on this forum that my concern for the Alpha is accuracy for closer in contact work.
