GSP Growing up!

Got my pup back in November. He is now ten months old, can whoa on a dime, comes every time I command him to, is conditioned to gunfire, gets to work with birds at least twice a month, conditioned to water, and is retrieving decently. Any members with older dogs have any other recommendations for wh...

Re: Time for an E-Collar

Ended up getting the Tri Tronics g3 Sport basisc. Loving it. Simple. Reliable. My dog "Here's" every time with or without the collar on, "Whoa's" on a dime, and using the Vibrate setting, can be silently released from "Whoa". 6 months old and it made a huge difference. He loves it when I pull it out...

I've got some private landowners I can introduce you to, but the three rivers bird dog club is the best way to go. I'm going to join this month and know quite a few people who are members. PM me for more info

Tri Tronics G3 replacement collar?

I had a friend give me his transmitter for a Tri Tronics G3 but no collar. Does anyone know if I can simply buy the standard replacement collar and is there a way to tune it to the transmitter? Thanks for future comments :D

Re: I just got my first real gun dog..... now what?

What part of eastern washington? I'm in the tri cities and am a new dog trainer. Just joined the Three Rivers Bird dog club which is helping me a lot along with the Perfect Start/Perfect finish video series. Put out a post asking if you can borrow it. I got multiple offers to borrow it for free and ...

Re: Whoa Breaking Method?

I've used that method for a dog that sits on whoa. That is the only time it makes the training process easier. Other than that, a regular whoa post works fine, or teach it from heel. +1 I got my pup 3 months ago at 8 weeks old. It's my first pup and I started Whoa-ing him two weeks ago. I can stop ...

Time for an E-Collar

Well I've finally got enough pennies saved up for an E collar for the pup. He's almost 5 months old and I at least want to get it on him so he associates it with having fun when we go out in the field. Is it worth the extra $ to go with a TT G3? I'm also looking at sport dog brands because I have a ...

Re: Pup's first day with birds!!!

Did your friend train those two V's to master hunter? If so, he would be a great resource to use in training your pup. Yes he did. He uses them as bird dogs as well, not just for trials and competitions. I like asking him questions but try not to come running everytime I'm unsure about something so...

Re: Pup's first day with birds!!!

How old is the pup, what do you want from the dog, what does he know now? Not knowing anything about the dog, I would tell you to get him out in areas that may hold wild birds and let him run, hunt, range, find birds, point birds, chase game, learn to hunt and to explore, to gain independence and b...

Pup's first day with birds!!!

Took my pup out today with a friend who has two viszlas that are both master hunters. Introduced the pup to birds, let him get on some good points and stretch his legs. Just curious from here on out, what are people's opinions on a good chronological order for training. Whoa first? Here first? What'...

Haha yes I tried sifting through the posts and found some good stuff. How big does a coop need to be? I'm not sure how many I need either. I'm thinking about 10 or so.

Keeping Pigeons?

Looking at setting up a pigeon coop and getting a supply of homing pigeons to train my dog with. He's a 15 week old GSP. Just wondering what kind of setup everyone uses to house their pigeons, how much work it takes to keep them, and how to train them to "Home" so I don't have to keep spending as mu...

Re: Pup doesn't appreciate praise?

The father of modern behaviorism, B.F.Skinner, defined a reinforcer as "that which reinforces." Pups are no different than any other living organism - different things reinforce them. It may be that praise from you will work at some point, but for now, pup has too many other things to discover and ...

Pup doesn't appreciate praise?

I've got a 14 week old german shorthair. When training him, I've run into something that strikes me as pretty different. he doesn't seem to like being petted or praised. When we practice "Here" he comes to me but once he reaches me, darts off to what he was doing before with as little attention paid...

My 11 week pup does the exact same thing. Crazy for an hour, sleeps for two :P just a pup being a pup I suppose. So far he's doing good with everything I've thrown his way. He's scared of nothing it seems. I was walking him in a field to let him get some scents and develop some independence when a c...

I'm in the same boat. 11 week old pup and working on setting him up to be a gun dog. I got the perfect start/finish series to borrow from another GDF member. So this is a huge shot in the dark, but I was wondering if anyone who owns the perfect start/perfect finish video series would rent it to me? Name a price and we can talk. New Trainer with 10 week old GSP

Howdy all. I'm a 20 year old college student with my first dog. He comes from a good pedigree and seems to be a promising pup. Just wanting some good advice on training him.
