Re: Dog is yo- yoing

I realize that not everyone has the equipment/grounds to do this on, but I think the answer to a lot of the handling issues is to work them from horseback or from ATV and work them at a fast pace. If the handler is on an ATV and going 10 mph or so, the dog learns to find the front and stay there. C...

Re: Dog got bird.......

Did you shoot your gun when the bird popped? The reason I asked is if you did then the dog simply thinks he's retrieving a shot bird back to you. No harm no foul. He doesn't know the difference. Agree. It sounds like the dog stood well while the flusher was flushing. Your right, if the gun was fire...

Re: How to Limit Range of Young GSP

mik, If I had a dog that was not listening to me as I would like I would sure enough rectify the situation. Get a hold of him and make him listen. On range, to each his own. I hunt some nasty covers in Northern Lower Mich. A 60 yard dog would not make me very happy. Give me a least a 150 yard dog an...

Glad it's working for you. I don't like to take the pull out of young dogs. This helps to control it but doesn't cure it.

Re: Having problems with lead training

When I take young pups for walks and I don't want them to pull I'll wrap the leash around the pups waist in a half hitch and then to the collar. No jerking needed. When the pup pulls to hard it tightens around the waist. Makes things a lot easier. If they still pull to much a sharp pull by you will ...

Re: 8 month old and e collar??

Young dogs hunt everything that smells good to them. Using the e-collar on off game to early can sometimes inhibit proper development on birds. Not always but sometimes. I wait to trash break my dogs until I know that their bird finding, range and handling skills are advanced enough so they will not...

Re: Am I missing something?

I am assuming the dog cannot differentiate the difference between cold and hot spots and it is obviously too tricky of a problem to correct in a "hunting environment." But if you think about It, it is kind of a crapshoot: if the dog is on point, you kick around and there is no bird then you are cre...
