Possessive with birds
I have a 9 year old GSP. She does really well pointing and retrieving birds. However she has started to become very possessive with the birds when she does retrieve them to where Iam prying her mouth open trying to get her to release the birds. She starting doing this while training with bumpers as ...

Re: Limping
My 5 year old will limp on front leg after hunting once in awhile. Not sure what caused it but it always clears up in a day or two. Never really got it checked out since it always got better. I assume she is prone to muscle, tendon injuries??

I have a 4 year old GSP that has been force fetched. The last few years she has retrieved everything I have shot perfectly. Even at the beginning of this season she has retrieved all the birds I have shot. However the last 2 times out hunting I have run into an issue. A week ago I shot a bird and wh...

Re: Question about first season with a GSP
Nice looking dog. has similar markings to mine!!
1st season hunt her alone and have fun. Dont shoot a bird she does not point. If she has a nice point, flush and shoot the bird. After the season then start working on steadiness. good luck and have fun.

Retrieving issue
I have a 4 year old GSP. She has always been a good retriever but lately when she brings a bumper or dummy back to me she will lock on it and wont drop it after I command out. She wont do it all the time but only when she "thinks" we are going to stop playing fetch. My concern is when we are hunting...

Running birds
It is the last few days of hunting pheasants and I have run into some problems with my 3 year old GSP. She is steady to shot and fall and has been doing very well all season until recently. The pheasants we have hunted have really been running on her. She tracks them well and maybe will stop and poi...

Re: Hunting dead
My dog is 3 years old she is a GSP. She is steady to wing shot and fall which Iam finding out isn't always the best if Iam hunting in thick cover. (she points I flush and shoot and she has no idea where the bird fell because she is standing still). I have also noticed when i shoot a bird and if its ...

Hunting dead
I was wondering if anyone has some training ideas to get my dog to hunt dead. It arose because this last weekend I was hunting with her and she pointed and i shot a pheasant she tracked and retrieved. while i was watching her my friend stepped on a bird and shot a pheasant that sailed 100 yards and ...

dog wrist injury
The bad luck with my dog does not seem to end. After 2 TPLOs on her back legs in the last 2 years she started to limp on her front leg. i took her to the vet where they noticed swelling in her ankle and did an x-ray. He thinks she has strained the tendons from jumping off an elevated surface. All I ...

complications after TPLO
My dog has had 2 TPLO surgeries, one on each leg. The first one went very well. She was 100% 6 months after surgery. The second one on her left leg was done in october of 2013. I have noticed the last 3 months she still lifts that leg up on occasion and when going downstairs she will hold it up on t...

steady to shot question
I have not hunted my dog for over a year as she has just recovered from her second TPLO. Prior to her surgeries she was pretty steady to wing and shot. Iam taking her hunting at a hunt club for the first time in awhile. I have to use up my birds I had paid for last year!! Iam treating this first hun...

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
Its been about 10 weeks since my dogs second TPLO. I thought she started doing weight bearing much sooner than her first leg. I have been taking her to hydrotherapy and she seems to be doing well for the most part. I did start walks with her after about 4 weeks. It has been really cold the last few ...

Breeder for small Munsterlanders

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
I have scrounged up the money and will be doing TPLO surgery tomorrow on her other leg. Pretty much will miss this hunting season but hope she is healthy and ready to go next year!! The surgeon thought she would be ready to hunt at the hunt club starting in january. I was happy to hear that since I ...

Re: Other leg with a torn ACL
Thanks for all the responses. Iam sure in a predicament though. My dog has been doing OK. I stopped making her run by not throwing bumpers or anything for her and just taking her to the park and letting her exercise on her own. i feel she can run if she wants to and she does quite a bit. She still l...

Other leg with a torn ACL
My 2 year old GSP tore her right rear ligament in her knee last year and had TPLO surgery in December. She was doing great and I was hoping for a good hunting season when in the last month she started limping and favoring her left leg. The vet feels she has partially torn her left ACL. Iam devastate...

Re: Torn ACL
I ended up doing the TPLO surgery. It is 9 weeks post op and she seems to be doing well. I have progressed through rehab to where Iam letting her off leash and she is running in the back yard. The next step is to start throwing her bumpers and making her run. Doesnt seem to have any favoring althoug...

Re: GSP broken leg, what to expect.
My dog had TPLO surgery and she is on her 3rd week post surgery. It has been difficult keeping her calm but she is starting to walk on the leg already and will be looking for some water therapy for her. Stick to a good rehab plan and he will be good to go.

I have a 1 1/2 year old GSP that was just diagnosed with a torn ACL. She slipped on wet pavement about a month ago and came up lame. Limped on her hind leg for a month and took her in for an exam when they diagnosed her. The vet gave 2 options. An extracapsular procedure or TPLO surgery. He recommen...

I had a 5 year old GSP who had one on her inner ear. It was removed but eventually came back. She had it removed again but she developed more on her head and neck. The one on her neck was the size of a golf ball. Had that one removed and eventually went to a specialist. Put her on one dose of chemo ...

Have you ever tried an ecollar? works wonders. Just make sure before using it he knows what come means. when using the collar start with very light stimulation. Give him the stimulation first then call him in (have a checkcord on him when doing this). If he doesnt respond pull him to you. The second...

I have a 1year and a half GSP. I have trained her for the most part myself. She did earn a ribbon in a junior hunt test. When I trained her this summer she would do a great job. good search, range out, steady and retrieve to hand. However, now that hunting season has started I took her out and she d...

Re: Hunt test
I would like to run my dog in hunting tests. I figure it would give her extra training in the offseason and fun to do. thanks for the advice. All very good. I just ran my dog this past weekend in a Junior Hunt test. she ran both days and did not pass. she is a 10 month old GSP. Re: Free Range Bird Dog
Keeping a hunting dog inside the house does not have a negative impact on its hunting capabilities. I have had 3 GSPs all great house dogs and all 3 were great hunters. I think the whole thing of keeping your hunting dogs outside is old school thoughts.

For bird introduction I planted quail for her and she did a nice job covering ground and searching for the birds. But she knew there were birds out there. For obedience training I have taught her to heel and she does well. I also have taught her the come command which she does pretty well at. But wh...

Puppy ranging
I have a 6 month old GSP. I introduced her to birds a few times this past summer. I have taken her pheasant hunting when the season started and she usually does not range more than 10 feet from me usually walking kind of slow and methodical sometimes stopping right by my feet. However, when she gets...
