Re: Questions for Purina users..

I feed Pro Plan Performance when leading up to and during hunting season. I add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin daily to help digestion, and a tablespoon of olive oil for skin and hair. When I work my dog hard, I add an egg, or egg white. Off season, I shift to Purina Shredded formula for lower prote...

Re: Pointer books, dvd?

I recommend two books:
1. The Training & Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog by Sigbot Winterhelt & Ed Bailey.
2. Training the Versatile Hunting Dog by Chuck Johnson.

I suggest a visit to Gun Dog Supply's website. www.gundogsupply.com
He has a lot of information and great reviews. You can get some very good collars for under $300.

Re: Time for an E-Collar

I have the Sportdog 1825. The thing I like most about it is the fit. It perfectly fits the right hand and the buttons are right there and you don't have to look at it. Not only the buttons, but also the intensity dial. Very easy to use and it can be set up for a variety of options regarding tone, vi...

Re: New Member needs some help please

If you are looking for one book, I would suggest, "The Training & Care of the Versatile Hunting Dog" by Sigbot Winterhelt & Ed Bailey. My second suggestion would be, "Training the Versatile Hunting Dog" by Chuck Johnson. These are both very good books. The first offers a pretty straight forward step...

I had a similar problem with my Shorthair when he was a pup. I had him on Blue Buffalo, switched to Taste of the Wild, and Acana. He had problems with all three. I finally switched to Purina Pro-Plan and he hasn't had any problems. You might want to try the following: 1. Add a tablespoon of plain yo...

Re: Mad as a hornet about leaky boots...

I have a pair of Wolverine Forresters (non-insulated) that I have worn through mud and water 6" deep with no leaks. Wolverine has an insulated boot (Pathfinder). Very light and comfortable. Feels like a sneaker. On the leather boots I wear, I oil them myself and seal the seams with silicone spray. H...

Re: Retrieving Questions?

Onk, It looks like you are on the right track. Don gave some great advise. I started my pup on bumpers and pheasant wings with a check cord. Once he realized that bringing them to me resulted in more fun, that is all he has done. No one has thrown a bumper for my dog except me, and when he retrieves...

Re: another puppy question

I agree with Joe. When I introduced my dog to pigeons (at 6-7 months old) I let him chase the first couple. This really got him excited about birds. One thing I did, was have a teathered pigeon that the dog would find, and when he started to chase it, I released one from hand, as if the teathered bi...

Re: Customer Review Dogs Unlimited

I do want to give a shout out to Gundog Supply. After trying several other online stores, Gundog Supply and Dogs Unlimited are the only two I go to. GDS has outstanding customer service, and their web site offers a lot of valuable information, including reviews, comparisons and recommendations.

Re: Sportdog collars? vs TT collars

I have the Sportdog 1825. The main reason I chose it was the "vibrate" feature and the way it fit in my hand. I have used it for about a year now and I like it very much. I have only used it out to about 300 yds, and it worked fine there (rolling hills). I can't really testify regarding its actual w...

Congratulations Don. If you have the time I would train the dog yourself. Nothing against professional trainers, but if you are willing and able to spend the time to do it yourself, you and your dog will develop a bond that you will never forget. My suggestions: 1. Crate train, obedience train and h...

Re: Word to the wise. and the newbies.

This is a very important topic, and I am glad you posted it. It is important to set our priorities, and with me, my dog is tops over anyone I may be hunting with. Please don't be afraid to talk to people prior to hunting with your dog. Unless I am hunting with guys I have hunted with a lot, I always...

Re: How to Limit Range of Young GSP

Mik, I have a male GSP that I can successfully handle at 30-40 yards using a whistle. While it's true that Pointers are big running dogs, there is nothing more important than the dog hunting for you. I hunt pheasant in South Dakota a couple times each year (I was raised there). A big running Pointer...
