Barking at/chasing the cat
I have a one year old setter (Ellie) who hunts everything that moves including my cat. She stalks the cat and then barks at her when she gets her in a corner. Ellie is afraid of the cat so I don't think she would ever do any actual damage but it scares the cat to death. I'm surprised the cat (indoor...

Re: Place for dog to run in southwest Virginia
Yeah I'm moving up to the Roanoke area for graduate school! It's only for two years and my parents will most likely keep my dog most of the time since they're much better equipped. I just haven't given up hope of cobbling together a way to keep her with me. I wouldn't need to hunt on the land, just ...

Hi guys! Does anyone know of a place in southwest Virgina that would be safe enough and big enough to let a 1 year old setter run? I would even be willing to pay for the use of the land. I'm moving there for a couple of years and trying to make plans for my dog. I don't think the local dog park is g...

My dad has a Brittany who is about 4 years old now. When she was a puppy she didn't care much for people. It took her years before she even liked to be petted. Now she will come around for a pat on the head but she is still a very independent dog. The same goes for my one year old English setter, wh...

5 year old setter, constant quivering, tail tucking
Hi everyone. We have a 5 year old male setter who has been quivering and keeping his tail tucked for the last couple of days. My dog, Ellie, stays in an outdoor kennel during the day and comes in at night. I think this is ideal. Ellie enjoys being with...

The english setters I've known have been more playful and entertaining personality-wise than the Britts I've known. Britts seem to be all business, all the time while ES are goof-balls when not hunting. Of course, this is purely anecdotal and it may just come down to breeding.

I've actually wondered the same thing.
Seems as though "woah" tells the dog to hold back, or take it easy. Stay, on the other hand, is a rigid "don't move" command. I'm sure someone else will have a better answer but that's my understanding of it.

If your dog is focused on another dog and gets zapped, she'll think the dog zapped her. You're setting her up for fear or aggression. Internal freak outs are freakouts none the less. You calm=her calm. You nervous=her nervous. :D Okay, that all makes sense. I can definitely see how she might interp...

Timing is everything. Attach a leash to your belt and the dog. You'll be right there if he pees and can correct him. If it's 3+ minutes after the pee that you notice, don't correct; pup will have no idea what you are mad about. I did this religiously until mine was 5 or 6 months. Sometimes I still ...
