I have lived and hunted in either ND or SD my entire life. Pointers work just fine. I will be quite honest depending on where you hunt you quite honestly don't even need a dog. Pretty much any place in south dakota you can find water you will find good duck hunting. We live in southern part of the state, hunt quite a bit in the northern part of the state and there are ducks everywhere in between. Lots of public land as well. I lived in the ND for awhile as well.
