Questions about guiding

There must be a shortage of guides in my area, I say this because I have been asked if I would be interested in guiding bird hunts by a couple preserves in my area. This is not meant as a brag, my dogs are good dogs but not perfect. I have guided family members often and have done a bunch of solo hu...

Re: What is your dogs favorite toy or chew?

Here is how it works in our house. Any bone or antler that our GSP has left laying around our Boykin will quickly claim. As soon as she runs off with it the GSP wants it back and takes it from her. She goes to get another bone and the process starts again. The favorite items to go for are the antlers!

Re: Dirt Bags!!!!

Sorry to hear about that. I have neighborhood kids come around and check out my quail pen but never had anyone disturb the birds. Now as for deer hunting, I have had too many stands stolen out of the woods. always on private land and I even had them chained and locked on to the trees they were hangi...

Number of birds worked per year question.

I know that the more birds my dog gets to work over the better. Last year we had the chance to work over about 150 birds. This year we should be able to hit about 250 birds. Is there a benchmark number that will benefit my dog and his ability. I live in an area where we don't have wild birds so our ...

New puppy questions.

We will be bringing home a new puppy next week. The pup is a Boykin Spaniel. I currently have a 3yr old GSP. The GSP spends most of his time outside. The Boykin will spend most of her time inside. Any suggestions on the best way to introduce the dogs to each other. I will always supervise the dogs w...

Re: Registering a Boykin with the BSS

Thanks for the link. I have been to the site before and maybe I am missing something. I see how the litter is registered and I also see the application for a membership to the BSS. What puzzled me was the application for membership. I did not see where it asked for specific info on the individual do...

Registering a Boykin with the BSS

I am looking to get a Boykin Spaniel. I have never owned this breed before and I would like to hunt and trial the dog. I understand that the dog must be registered with the BSS to participate in trials. How does this process work? Is my understanding correct that the litter must first be registered?...

Re: 28 ga over a 20 ga

I use a 20 gauge and load a 3/4 ounce load. Clay buster has a 3/4 ounce wad that makes reloading a breeze. My 20 ga guns weigh under 6 pounds each so they are great to carry. Not sure if this info will help you but I thought I would pass it along.

Re: Best way to get permission???

Around here in NC and SC (I live near the state line) the deer hunters have gobbled up most available land. Deer hunters pay the land owners a minimum of $10/acre for a lease. Trying to get on any land before January is near impossible. I have had to resort to paying to be part of a hunt club and st...

Grade 2 or buy the grade 4 Ugartechea

I am having a tough time deciding which gun to buy. A grade 2 28ga or a grade 4 28ga ugartechea. I have looked at a bunch of guns and it has come down to these two. The practicle side of me says get the grade 2 save some money and be happy. The grade 4 is just a great looking gun and the price from ...

Re: Handling Quail?

I use to keep a pen in my garage and every once in a while a bird would get loose. The easiest way to catch them is to trun off all the lights. When it is totally dark they will just stay put. I would use a little pen light to locate the bird just before picking one up. If you can't get things dark ...
