Re: Coyote as a bird dog
Surprises me, too. Noses on coyotes in my part of the country are nowhere near as good as our bird dogs'.....at least as far as pheasants, sharptail, and Huns are concerned. And as far as a dog at 8 months not being any good as a bird dog......Sorry, I just don't buy it. Your mileage may vary.

We always make ours out of old belting from a round baler. Every rancher/farmer with a round baler has some old stuff that he should have no problem parting with.

Re: What hunting trip or destination do you dream about?
The actual destination would be less important than the dogs and the friends along and, simply being there. However, if actually dreaming, I would dream about a trip reunited with those friends and dogs now gone, as dreams make that possible. We would, in that dream, revist some alder runs in the U...

I use a Nikon D7000, too. I would go with something in the 5000 series at least, if a Nikon feels good in her hands. Canon and Nikon are like Chevy and Ford, to me. I have friends in both camps, and everyone seems happy

My dogs always poop upwind of the truck whenever we first get to a hunting spot. They face into the wind. :D Are you sure? Into the wind? Please check and report back. They both did exactly that very thiñg this morning. The guy hunting with me thinks they are trying to tell me something... He laugh...

You had best give yourself credit for getting your dog out so she can do what she was born to do. That is, by far, the most important thing you can be good at. Dogs are very forgiving creatures. She doesn't think that you are going to get them all.

Re: Question about first season with a GSP
In my opinion, your older dog probably can teach your pup a few real important things. I would take them together, and then hunt them separately if you get frustrated, so you can teach her the correct way to do some things that she is missing. I think that the most important thing is for you to get ...

I have Labs, a bit heavy to lift. I have a Petsmart ramp. Works well off any tailgate and even reaches up to the holes of a topper rig. Ramps are better for dogs in the long run. The impacts of jumping up and especially down are hard on the joints. Thanks. Which one? Telescoping, or folding? It can...

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions or experience with folding or telescoping ramps that will work for getting an old dog up on and down from a 3/4 ton pickup tailgate. Thanks.

I always carry a Camelback, or whatever they are called.... And I always squirt water for them/on them, long before I think that they need to drink. I think that by doing it this way, we avoid the big gulps at the end of a run/hunt. As mentioned before, young dogs don't always have a very good sense...
