Re: Gamebird Transition
It seems like with your set up you should have the ideal situation. i assume you are talking Bobwhite quail. If you have a call back, the birds fly good after a day or two of being out. If you control the dog on a couple birds he should get it. Don't shoot any birds he chases and get some kind of ha...

Re: Gamebird Transition
If you have him solid on pigeons, he should easily transition to quail. Don't know how you are planting pigeons, if you use a launcher the same should work for quail. You should have a solid whoa command. I don't use a checkcord once the dog is standing birds. When he is on point walk in and flush. ...

Personally, I stayed with one breed. It was not because I thought it was the best. I would have really liked to breed other breeds. One for sure would have been Springers. But it is so difficult to breed really good dogs that one breed is about all a person can handle. Most breeders just give up whe...

Not all unproductive points are false. Sometimes the bird has left the area before the dog gets there or runs off after the point. Most dogs figure it out. Strange with a dog that is 4 years old. But a lot we don't know about the dog. I think if it was my dog, I would send him in to flush if I thoug...

Re: false pointingIhave a setter
Lots of young dogs false point, especially if they are naturally steady to flush. When we do a lot of training without much chasing and flushing, they seem to get the idea that if they point the handler finds a bird. It is very common in hunt test dogs that are pressured hard to be steady to WSF. Th...

I trained many MH dogs with a silhouette. I didn't have a launcher in those days. I set the fake dog some place where the training dog would come on it by surprise. For Hunting huge cattail areas like Sand Lake in SD the beepers are great. It opens in mid December so the deer trails are froze over. The dogs learn to back each others beeper. You need to understand how the Canine world works. Puppies are always working to improve their position in the pack. Puppy play is only part play. Blue heelers and coonhounds are not bred to flush hard. You are not training them to do something that is considered a fault for their breed. All predators will point and most will flush, maybe all.
