Re: Ruffed Grouse chicks

Didn't see many birds this year until the past week while out picking Chantrelle mushrooms. Monday we saw two batches of Ruffies in about 10 acres and we weren't even looking. Now I'm getting pumped wishing my summer away for fall.

Does anyone have experience with rigging a longe line throught the collar and up through a pulley perhaps and back to a collar at the rear of the dog. Saw it done once and can't remember how to rig it. Dog is raised off the ground if it breaks whoa...apparently dogs don't like losing contact with th...

I hunt the canadian shield swamps, conifer belts and tag alders, etc where the sound of a bell gets lost very quickly...I use a Dogtra and a Lovett...I like the Lovett except that every time that we get back in the vehicle the "bleep" thing goes on hawk squeal .....basically it's a pain to turn on/o...

Actually didn't set her up for failure...the birds were there , we were there...at a barbeque and she was walking under the trees loaded with grouse...didn't ask her to find them ...wasn't hunting....just thought that perhaps the scent would drop as she has picked up on birds in the trees. Thanks folks...there were a lot of people at the barbeque and the smell of hot dogs and marshmallows in the air...it's not important because she did have a super fall. Just made me wonder about the scent from the birds and the weather conditions at this time of the year. It was pretty cold for her t...

It's really strange because she was red hot hunting all fall. Pointed a lot of birds from Sept 06 thru Dec...missed one weekend because an injury to her foot.Just seemed weird because she had been picking up birds in spruce trees about 3 weeks ago. I don't worry about conserving birds...just don't have the bloodlust anymore. Don't worry about the Red Tailed Hawks...buteos are slow will take the odd grouse. The ones that you have to worry about are Coopers and Goshawks...I'm a falconer of over 50 years. The main birds that I flew were the latter two.
