Causes of pain in an older GSP

My Abby is a seven year old GSP that has always been healthy and a strong hunter. Three weeks ago we were hunting a pivot corner of switch grass when she "cried" like she had been over corrected with a collar. I know that I didn't give her any stimulation and it happened three more times in that fie...

Re: Death of a dog

Thanks to everyone that replied and for your kind words and thoughts. My son is grown but has had this dog for nine years and he and his wife were very attached. I particularly like the one about the man, his horse and his dog. I will remember that one! I think the poem I was looking for was in a bo...

Death of a dog

My sons dog had to be put to sleep tonight and as expected, he is very upset. :( I read a poem once, I don't remember the name, about the death of a hunting dog. It talked about how much pleasure they give and how tough it is when they die. I can't seem to find it anywhere now when Tony could use it...

Re: Back from Kansas

I just got back from Kansas and had great luck. I shot my limit on WIHA three out of the four days I was there and saw lots of birds. :D I was by myself so hunted small areas and places that I had to walk to. In other words I hunted hard and stayed away from the easy to get to spots. I wouldn't thin...

Ticks and Lyme disease

We took our three dogs camping with us last week and allowed them to roam the area. They came back covered with ticks, both wood and deer types. When we returned home I put Bio-Spot on them and have been pulling ticks as I find them. (I know I should have put the Bio-Spot on before we went but I did...

Re: Zimecterin Gold

I've been using the Ivomec liquid for more than 20+ years and never had a problem. I buy mine at Tractor supply, keep it in the fridge and use a TB syringe to get the exact amount needed for each dog. I weigh the dogs before giving it to them and compute the dose and go from there. Mine usually expi...

Heater in a portable dog box

I have two GSP and a Welshie that are house dogs and hunters. I carry them in a Houndsman Deluxe box in the back of my pickup and have a remote thermometer in the box with them to tell how hot or cold it is in there. Since they are house dogs and don't have a heavy coat I'm a little concerned when t...

Re: Kent Ultimate Fast Lead

I bought some in 12ga a couple of years ago late in the season and they worked great! I actually liked them better than the Winchester Super Pheasant loads. I haven't seen them in 20ga around here or I would buy some. I didn't care for the Fiocchi (sic) Golden Pheasant loads that I had in 20ga #5's....

I'm cleaning out the safe.....

I’m cleaning out my safe and have listed a bunch of guns that I don’t/can’t shoot anymore on Gunbroker. All of these would make great pheasant guns, especially the SIG SA-5 and the Beretta Ultralight. http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=143355676 SIG Rizinni 20ga http://gunbroker.com/Auct...

Re: What type of shotgun are you using for your bird hunts?

I quit using my semi auto Benelli's and switched to SXS's. The bug bit hard last year with a Franchi Destino, a Grulla 209 HL 20ga and an Ugartheche Grade IV 12ga. I shoot them all very well and don't think I will ever go back to a semi auto for anything than maybe having to shoot steel shot.

Re: Ithaca Model 51 20ga.

I had a Model 51 12ga a long time ago. I saved my money and bought it in 1978 during pheasant season from a gun shop in Hasting Nebraska. It was, without a doubt, one of the most unreliable shotguns that I have ever owned. I had a Model 37 pump 20ga and thought the quality would be similiar. Boy was...

I used to shoot Federal High Power 20ga but think they must have discontinued them, I can't find them anymore. I have always had good luck with the premium Winchester, the ones marked X206 etc, not the XU206. I tried Fiocchi (sic) Golden Pheasant earlier this year and found them to be great as well....

I like a O/U or a S/S but have been carrying a Benelli Ultralight and/or a Montefeltro. It seems that as I get older I don't shoot as well and I hate nothing more that to wound any bird and then not find it. Several times earlier this year I hit birds with both shots from my Rizzini and it still fle...

I carried mine on Saturday, it's nice and light. I took the plug out and you can slide 3 into the magazine, the last one drops onto the shell follower. It works just fine that way, it's a tight fit but it goes in. I still don't feel like I shoot mine as well as the Monte in 20ga. I carried it the ot...

I hunted on the 8th and 9th near the Audoban area. We killed 6 the first day (2 of us) and 9 the 2nd day. (3 of us). I saw more birds this year over there than I have ever seen before. It actually reminded me of years gone past in South Central Iowa around Mt. Ayr. We saw at least 15 roosters come o...

They are sweet, mine doesn't seem any heavier than my Montefeltro 20ga. I don't think that I should it as good as the Montefeltro though, might just be my imagination. Check out shotgunworld.com in the Benelli section for lots of opinions and reviews.

Tired short hair pointer

I have a two year short hair that seems to be extremely tired or she is just plain lazy. She has been an active dog, been exercised all summer and looks to be in good health. She gets fed good food, but after hunting for even a couple hours acts like she is just exhausted. I hunted her for less than...

A proud dad

I have two shorthairs, Jane is 17 months old and Abby, her full sister is 5 months old. We've been hunting them together here in Nebraska for pheasant and quail since we got ABBY at 12 weeks old.. For the most part Abby went along for some exercise and company until last weekend. We were hunting a s...
