Re: Looking for a remote cabin in Maine, take my son grouse hunt

m244 I would recommend going to the Bird Dogs Afield website birddogsafield.com and watch the video episodes for Maine Grouse hunting. There are several over the 3 seasons of episodes. It will give you some first hand info on lodges. Guides I believe are optional and you can hunt just about everywhe...

Re: field pants

Orvis Red Hills Briar Pants model 8673. I have always bought them at an Orvis outlet for about $60 on sale. Thin enough for warmer weather and thick enough as it gets cooler and after I add wax to the front panel it keethat keeps from wearing too uch weight in a pair of pants for all the walking.ps ...

Re: 75 days and a wake up

gotpointers,

I did not come across any bowhunters (not even any of their vehicles) though I didn't hunt until early October. Good thing to be cautious for-thanks.

Re: SE Virginia hunting ??

When I was stationed in Virginia I tried to hunt upland (quail and grouse) with no luck on the wild side. You can go to a preserve for planted quail. I also went west to the George Washington and Jefferson National forest with no luck. Stay in WI-that is where I wish I was for that time. At least ke...

Re: Self guided hunting

Great post-I would use the service but generally due to scheduling it is me and a dog. I wish they offered lower minimum than 4 hunters or better take reservations for individual hunters for openings that the party does not mind an outsider.

Re: Best boots for the rocks

Danner Pronghorns- I have my second pair and hunt regularly with them. First pair lasted 4 seasons-this pair is on my 3rd season. The best thing about them for me has been zero breakin time and no rubs or blisters. Compared to my new Irish Setters which were comfortable around the neihborhood with m...

Re: Indispensable skills

Unless you can navigate extremely well AND yoi are familiar with location you are hunting, no excuse not to have a GPS these days given the price for handhelds woth maps. Water and little food as well. Leave a note on car and let someone know area you are hunting and expected return. Call same when ...

Re: Upland Hunting Coats - Recommendations?

Filson oil upland jacket. I can not wear the wool collars that is standard-scratches the heck out of my neck. I had them put the mole skin material on the collar about 20 years ago and now that has become a regular option for their coats. Check ebay or local sporting good stores-lots of folks do not...

Re: Gun advice

Thanks for serving and keep safe over there. As others have said previously- alot depends on what you prefer to shoot and your budget allows great options. I would recommend several lower priced guns including an auto, side by side, and over and under if you can't decide or can not get the opportuni...

Re: cheap o/u?

Stoegers at around $400 are unbeatable and great for the field-no worrying about scratches/moisture etc.

American Arms if they still make them.

Just became a member. Upland hunter enthusiast with great birdog is the only way to make it complete. Currently have a terrific GSP at 11 years old-have had poor experience getting a replacement recently but I am still in the hunt despite losing alot of $$ in the process.
