Re: How long for an EP to reach full growth?
21 months and 3 days... Well I really don't know, but there can be a great difference in the size of pointers. I have a 3 yr old male that is 55 lbs in fighting weight and a 22 month old female that might push 42 lbs on a fat day. But I train with a guy that has a 70 -75 lb male that is not fat at a...

Hunt the areas that most others will think "to much work to hunt". Hard work will pay dividends.

Re: Pup concerns
I believe it is normal. Some pups just don't like going in or out of crates. It takes some of them a while to connect the dots. Once they figure out the rides in the crate will result in a fun run or a hunt, they will get over all the fuss. I have a pointer bitch that is just over a year old that I ...

Re: How many is to many?
Where are you guys keeping them? What size kennels do you have? The setter and the shorthair live in the house. The two pointers live in the kennel. Open air on concrete with a washout and drain. Currently set up with two 10 x 10 runs and a 5 x10 run. Plastic barrels for dog houses. I don't think i...

Re: Fore-Angulation/Shoulders in Pointers.
I mean, the trial folks are obsessed with range, speed, style. That seems to be about it. You hear stories all the time about such and such a dog who was the hardest thing to train, was the meanest cuss around, was dumb as a box of rocks, but boy you should have seem him fly and, whoa, did he go up...

Re: Retrieving Stakes in Pointing Dog Trials
Ezzy[/quote] The "hunt" is about finding the game, the retrieve is about recovering the game. Any poodle can retrieve. While I agree that a complete hunting dog will retrieve, it is only a small part of the total picture and is not the definition of "superior hunting skills." It's senseless to argue...

I never said they don't go out of sight. They certainly do, but they don't just run off with you end up finding them on point. They dip in and out of site even though they may be 3/4 of a mile out there.they handle, they run, they find birds, and they have the ability to be heeled through tight spot...

I would think it depends on the grounds and conditions. As long as they aren't gone for too long its all good. All Age you don't want to see them unless they are standing or you call them back. I disagree, you want to see the all age dogs go in that country. You don't just want to find them on poin...

Re: Best shotgun for 10 yr old son
I am currently looking for a gun for my daughter who is 11. She has been carring my old Mossberg 500 youth 20, but it is a bit heavy and clunky for her. ( I never liked that gun and still don't) I am looking for an inexpensive, break open single shot,... that is hammerless. One that has a thumb safe...

Re: Shadow Oak Bo and Highground Jax Jabba
They have both already ran at Ames. To me that means they already are competeing and winning against the big-calibur pointers. They have to win against a field of big-calibur pointers to get there. I believe Shadow Oak Bo earned runner up at the Continental last season. That is a another endurance t...

Re: Recommendations for general purpose hunting boots
I recently bought a pair of boots for upland hunting as my others were past fixable. I ended up getting the "Cabela's Mock toe Work Boot" $129. They look a little nicer than the Cabelas Kangaroo Upland boot and they felt better when I tried them on. I have only worn them a few days and they are awes...

Trial Dog
With a lot of talk on this forum and several others about trial dogs, hunting dogs, meat dogs and birddogs, what is the definition of a trial dog to you. Not looking for which you think is better. Examples: Lets say a guy owns dogs that are out of field champions in one venue or the next, out of a l...

I totally agree Sharon. I train like that, but still puppies are puppies. And sometimes they do puppy things, that just make you shake your head. I also find it much more enjoyable to train with others. Especially when they are much more experienced than I. I always run my dog in a brace during trai...

Keep your chin up. I will bet he does better next time. My dog did the same thing in an all age derby stake, except he didn't have a bracemate. The next day I ran him in the derby (shooting dog standards) and he was a totally differnet dog. Placed 2nd. My mentor told me to enter him in as many stake...

In New York it's now a 200 dollar fine for a soda over 16 ounces and a 100 dollar fine for pot...... thats a $300 ticket really. After they get high, they go get a 32 ounce soda, and get busted for both! It is smart to wear a seatbelt. It is smart to wear a helmet. But, it should not be forced upon...

Garrison, I would really like to know more about this new orginzation, and have some questions. The length of my hunts varies a lot depending on weather, cover, the condition of my dogs, my condition level, how bad my feet hurt, how bad my back hurts, if I have other hunters with me and there intrests, and my enthusiasm on that particular day. Sometimes I try to loop around and switch dogs up ...

How I have always understood it, A meat dog must hunt with desire, find game, be reliabe at helping the hunter harvest the game whether it be pointing, flushing or retrieving, and be generally self-handling. A meat dog may or may not have, style, speed, or any other great attributes we look for but ...

I have four dogs. Two are just hunting dogs and two are field trial dogs ( a derby and a puppy). The best dog i have, as far as manners in the house are concerned, is my horse back derby dog. Re: Breeding program... Question for breeders.
I think it really depends on the line and or the breeding program. For some breeders, breeding "back" to average would not create a huge issue with their program. But for others it may be a big problem. Some folks are breeding daily drivers and some folks are breeding nascar racing machines. There a...
