Re: Quick Question

Many thanks for the replies and suggestions, folks. Yes, she is limiting the pup's interaction with his big brother, but wanted something to put on him, just in case. I relayed your suggestions to her, and we'll see how things go. Again, thank you.

Quick Question

Hey, folks. I know I don't post here much, more of a lurker, I guess, picking up useful information. I do need to be more active, I guess. Anyway, here's my question. A lady I know at a Lab forum I go to has a 7 yr. old Lab, who recently had surgery for laryngeal paralysis. He's recovering fine, but...

Re: What are some of the best dog houses?

I've got a K9 Kondo Dog Den 3. As for what makes it so nice...

It's made out of steel, which is nice with my power chewer Lab. Insulated on all 6 sides. Raised up off the ground. Has a swinging door with a rain shroud. And a removable roof, which makes it really easy to add or change bedding.

Re: Dog crapping while hunting?

Heh...this last pheasant season, I hunted with several guys who hadn't been out yet with my Lab, Diesel. I warned them that in the first 50 yards, they'd see him crap twice and pee a half dozen times. They thought I was kidding... I put it down to him being so excited about going hunting. He just ca...

Re: New e-collar, help?

I use the tone on my collar to check it's on, of course. And for the pooch it's used as an attention getter, like saying his name. In training, to reinforce that I want him to listen. When pheasant hunting, if he starts to get too far out, I just beep his collar and he moves back in. It's a handy fe...

Re: Bird hunting tips

When pheasant hunting, I pack plenty of water and a 1st aid kit for the dog. Also carry a portable waterer to give him a drink in the field. Anyone who bird hunts with me for the 1st time gets "The Lecture": Never, ever shoot at a bird on the ground. My dog might be right behind him. And, we follow ...

Re: dog houses

I thought about building one, but figured that for what it would cost me in money and time to build a really nice one, I could buy one. I got the Dog Den 3 from K9 Kondo. I've got a chewer, so the fact that it's made out of steel appealed to me. Add in fully insulated, swinging door, removeable and ...

Shells, gloves, basic 1st aid kit (wrap, gauze, emt gel, sterile water...main kit is in dog handler's bag in the truck), heavy boots laces in case of a conibear, and treats. Water is in a bottle with tray on my hip.

Re: Appetite for Deer Poops?

My first Lab would roll in it. It was an opening day of pheasant season tradition for many years. Every year...go hunting, dog rolls in poop, send dog into lake to rinse off the worst of it. My current Lab loves to eat it. I stop him if I catch him in time, otherwise if I don't he gets his snack. It...

Middle of the road for me. I don't feed the super cheap food, that I don't like the ingredients, and ends up in bigger piles in my yard. Or the real expensive stuff that's going to break my bank account.

Diesel get Country Vet Sportsman's Select, and does really well on it.

Re: A pointing lab is just a lab/cross

Well, I may regret sticking my oar into this pond, but here goes... Currently, I am on my second pointing Lab. In my opinion, Labs are not a pointing breed, they're flushers/retrievers. But, some of them will point. My first Lab Deacon would, and so does the current pup, Diesel. It's not always the ...

Re: How do you secure your dog crate to your Truck/SUV

ACooper, JWnissen, Buckeyebowamn, Are you speaking of tie downs to the back of your pick up or an SUV? Pickups have locations in the bed for tie downs, but the SUV appears to be more problematic. What is your experience with this? Thornapple Sorry, can't help you with the SUV. If the rear seat come...

I've got a Dog Den 3 for my Lab. Starting out, I just latched the door open for a couple days to let him get used to his new house. Once I let the door down, it only took him a few minutes to figure it out.

Best dog house I've ever had. Certainly money well spent.

My boy's a power chewer. He loves a rawhide or an antler, when I give him one, but they don't last long. For lasting toys, big nylabones and black kongs.

Re: What Breed Did You Start With

Pointing Labs for me. Years ago I was thinking of getting a hunting dog. When I told my cousin of my plans, he asked what breed I was going to get. I told him I was thinking of getting a Beagle, since I could bunny hunt with him and I figured a smaller short haired dog would be easier to keep clean ...

New Guy Intro

Howdy, folks. I've been lurking around this forum for some time now, and finally decided to get off my dead butt and join. My name is Joel, and I live in northwest Iowa. My user name comes from my boys. Deacon, my black pointing Lab, who sadly passed on April 2. And his protege Diesel, a 2 year old ...
