Re: Finding AKC HT Judges

Good luck! The HT judging pool decreased significantly with the AKC mandate that experienced judges had to take a written test to continue judging. As it's already a somewhat thankless and generally expensive donation to judge HT's for AKC events, a good many just said, Ok, I'll pass and haven't jud...

Re: Trainer issues

You don't owe the first trainer a thing. It's your dog, your money and your decision. Sometimes things happen, injuries, personal problems, whatever. It doesn't mean you don't have compassion, but your dog is in need of training and since the first guy wasn't able to respond for whatever reason I'd ...

Re: establishing focus on pheasants

Bottled scent is no great substitute for real birds. If you can, find some off season game birds and take her out to a place you can plant them. Work her into them and whether she points or not, kill a few birds over her. Getting her mouth on them will trigger a physiological response - kind of prim...

Re: Catching the birds

wild birds, problem solved. Yep. "Koda" tight on wild Pheasants - very close but will never catch one. http://youtu.be/4rYQp7YuGXM If you just can't do that - it's time to check cord the dog and extend the time it's on point. Had a similar problem with a female V that got to chase geese everyday. S...

It's been days since I last posted and my post hasn't been approved yet. :( Makes it hard to participate in a discussion. Ditto.... Spend the time to get involved on the board and by the time mine get looked at and approved I'm looooonng gone, the thread has totally morphed. Very frustrating :? No ...

Re: Great trial dog, great bird dog - One in the same?

It summarizes that trialers Breeding for frantic paced, overly animated, 1 hour extreme dogs, is ruining hunting dogs. Bill, This line alone is very telling of your opinion. I actually USED to believe the same thing 25 years ago. As with Hunters that move from the "kill" quantifying success afield ...

Re: Breeding sight-unseen, would you?

We did - went back a couple decades frozen to a HOF dog named E.T. He's still the top producer of Duals and FC's in Vizsla History. That was good, but we still talked to quite a few people from back in the day who personally knew him and had pups and grand pups out of him before we pulled the trigge...

Re: steadying question

You mention he does this on pigeons - what about released game birds? Often when working dogs they become soft on pigeons, but will change attitude completely when quail, chuckar or pheasant are used. I generally start dogs with pigeons, but will move to game birds relatively early - I'd suggest mov...
