Barking dog

How do I get my neighbors dog to stop barking at me? I can't do anything in my yard without my neighbors dog trying to break down my fence to get to me. I have tried squirting water at it every time it barks with no success. From what I can tell this dog gets almost no human interaction except for d...

Mixing Birds

I have a cage with a bunch of quail and was thinking about buying some pigeons. Can I mix the birds in the same cage or do I need to keep them separated?

Training with quail

I've been watch the George hickox training DVDs and he talked about the lock winged birds. In the video he uses pigeons. Will the lock wing thing work with quail?

Re: Quail Cage

I dont have a place to set out a recall box for an extended period of time. Most of my training will be at an alfafla field near my house. My JH is about complete and I'll finish it tomorrow. Its 6'tall, 6'wide, and 4' deep. How do you feed the quail? Do you just throw the feed on the sand or should...

Re: Quail Cage

So I was going to build it kinda small. 6' wide, 3' deep and 4' tall.

Looking at the second thread you posted, should I build it taller so I can walk into it?

Do they need it bigger so they can fly around? The way I am doing it now, they will only be able to walk.

Also, do they need sunlight?

Re: Quail Cage

Not sure what a Johnny house is. Basically I'm building a box to put quail in for training. I'm just going to use some material I have around the house, 1by 1s and 2by 4s. I'm thinking something like a rabbit cage. I read some stuff on the Internet that you want 2 square feet for one quail. Is that ...

Quail Cage

I'm going to build a quail cage and was wondering what I should use for the bottom of it.

Just ply wood? Or something with holes in it?

Should I put straw down for them?

Coyotes and Dogs

I was running my pup this evening and about 15 minutes into it I noticed a coyote about 200 yards in front of us. Normally when I see coyotes the are running away as fast as they can, but this one was just kinda hanging out, keeping his distance. It didn't seem too worried about us. I did an about f...

Re: new pup

Look up "how to help gun dogs train themselves" by Joan Bailey. Good book for the first year of pups life.
I'll also be buying the George Hickox DVD's very soon.

I will try that tonight. We actually took a couple of days off cause I've been working late. I'm going to take her out tonight and try it out.

Re: New GSH pup

Vet told me the same thing. They said bakersfield is real bad with parvo. I was worried i wouldn't be able to give my pup the correct "conditioning" for the first few months but I had a GSP that got parvo about 10 years ago and I didn't want to go through that again. My GWP had her last shots about ...

Re: Pup is not working close enough

Its funny cause she hears me walking. She is constantly looking back at me, even when she is 200 yards out. When I stopped walking she would pick up on that and and get real still. She couldnt see me but I could see her. She just stopped and waited until I said "here", then she would run at mach 10 ...

Re: Pup is not working close enough

If you want to correct it you will nee to work on her recall. If she was mine I would be tickled pink she was willing to get out from under my feet. Ezzy +1 Also it's a good sign that the pup is coming back. odds are it knows where you are the whole time even if you can't see the pup. But if that r...

Do they make an E-collar with a garmin built into it? I figured when she hits about 1 year I will be buying one anyway.

Re: Pup is not working close enough

Recall? You mean when I say "here" she comes? Is 5 months old too young for her to learn that? I have been working on "here" since I got her and she gets it most the time but when we are out running she just gets on her own program. When she dosent listen when I say "here", I don't continue to say i...

Pup is not working close enough

When I take pup out for her daily run she has done great at staying within about 100 feet in front of me. Well lately she has been just taking off 200 yards or so in any direction from me. I took her to my cabin this weekend and we had 3 foot of snow so I cut her loose for the experience and before ...

Re: Walking with a leash

I appreciate all the quick responses. Ray, the book I am reading focuses on conditioning and keeping everything fun and it dosen't go into any detail on how to get your pup to walk calmly on a leash. Your method seems correct. Im going to give the half hitch around the waist a try along with 4dabird...

Walking with a leash

I have a 5 month old GWP. I have been reading a book called "How to Help Gun Dogs Train Themselves" and so far most everything is going great with the early conditioning. Except for the leash conditioning. I take her on runs about 4 times a week and to 5 or 6 different locations. One of the location...

Re: Rabbit Problem

The dog spends most of his day pointing at the rabbit, he has not been hunting in a few years, so we did our best to keep the cage closed but last night she forgot to close it before bed. She was pretty upset about it today but she forgave the dog. We are already looking for another rabbit and I am ...

Rabbit Problem

My daughter is in 4H and has started raising a rabbit and my 13 year old GSP got in the cage last night and killed it. Since my dog wont be around much longer because of his age, I have be studying up on some training books and will be getting a GSP pup this year. My question is can you train a bird...
