Re: Which launchers and electronics?

I use the Lion Country launcher now and no problems. My biggest complaint was the launcher not getting the signal (very close usually) and failing to launch..then the dog was on top of it and wasted training. Also, they were very loud and actually jumped off the ground they were so violent when the...

Launcher Video and First Bird

Here are a couple of YouTube videos I shot today. First one is an operational demonstration of the DT Systems Bird Launcher. The second is my dog "Jester" getting his feet wet and getting his first pigeon. I wasn't real disciplined with him on the retrieve and hold, because I wanted him to have fun ...

Re: Which launchers and electronics?

I bought the LCS launchers to save money. Mistake.....it's the former Innotek stuff. You get what you pay for.

I exchanged them for DT launchers and love them. Not much more expensive, and not near the price of Dogtra. GDS is my source. Great service and prices.

Re: Talk to me about e-collars please!

The E collar is not to be used as a punishment. It's to be used as a motivator to do what you want. If you condition the dog to the e collar and use it with the "here" or "come" command, he will come to you with enthusiasm no matter what. It's called a "recall". Once the dog is conditioned for the c...

Re: E-collar training books or dvd?

Evan Graham has a section in his obedience that talks about E Collar Conditioning..very important watch. There isn't much to it, really...just have to get the dog conditioned to the collar. There is a youtube video as well about e collar conditioning that I like that makes sense anyway. It involves ...

Re: Bird launchers

I would not recommend the LCS launcher. I just returned 2 of them and they really are poorly built, and the electronics are not reliable. I have had many many training opportunities blown with my dog because it wouldn't launch.

Just spent a bit more on the DT launchers....

Re: Labs and Pigeons

For me, training my labs with pigeons is a step by step process: 1. Introduction to wings (let the pup to chase around a wing and catch it....increase the difficulty to build up the intensity 2. Introduction to live bird (take a pigeon and duct tape wings...toss in yard...let pup go crazy......shou...

Re: 1st day on the collar-UPDATE

I talked to TT today...they were more than helpful, and I found operator error to be most of the problem. First thing, to dispose of a common myth, the field 90 is NOT hotter than say a Sport Basic/Combo. The levels between the low and high stimulus are more adjustable, but level one is level one......

Re: 1st day on the collar

Makes you wonder whether the collar is having variability in output. Some dogs are drama majors, but this does sound like a pretty extreme reaction - enough to put using it on hold for awhile until you figure out what's happening anyway. Here's a link to an article by Kninebirddog. She's a GDF memb...

Re: 1st day on the collar

Thanks for all the replies. I tested on myself before I ever did on him, and it isn't comfortable on me, for sure but not painful on level 1 either. Sometimes I nick on 1 with him and maybe it's the collar position but he doesnt respond...other times it scares him and he doesnt like it. He actually ...

Re: 1st day on the collar

I was under the impression that the tubular models like the 70, 90, etc were far superior than the sport versions. If this unit is too much for my dog, why would it be ok for another?

1st day on the collar

I have a TT Field 90. My 8 month old lab was introduced today, per the video from the TT collar. He is much more disturbed about the collar shock on level 1, and made him turn into a different dog. Cowers, etc. He does know all the commands, heel, sit/stay, kennel, here, etc prior to the introductio...

Re: Trying to make a routine...new guy.

You need to make the crate a happy place. When they are hungry, through some treats in there and encourage him to get in, and dont close the door. Make it comfortable, and praise when he's in there. To help with the crying at first, you can put a shirt that you recently wore without washing in there...

Re: Labs and Pigeons

That is interesting. I recently took my dog to a local trainer who trains pointing dogs. Left him there for 3 weeks (out of 6 weeks supposedly to train him) and by the 3rd week, he was still "getting him used to birds" supposedly every day. Saw no training progress taking place, and then when I show...

Re: Labs and Pigeons

He is 8 months. Has good obedience with sit/stay, heel, here, etc. Conditioned for whistle come and stay commands, and am working on baseball retriever drills. He's finding scented dummies, etc.

Re: Labs and Pigeons

I am using remote launchers. I'm using Evan Graham DVD's for all the retrieve things, but need some guidance on how to employ the pigeon/launcher training.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Labs and Pigeons

Starting some pigeon work. Question is how to train once he gets scent? Am I training to mark the bird with a "sit" and then command the flush, or should I just let him flush him out and have him steady once it flushes?

Right or Left Side Heel?

I was in a discussion today about which side to train your dog to heel. I understand it's common to heel on the left for right handed shooters and vice versa. Is this largely because of the spent shells, noise, etc? The discussion was that if you were right handed you carried a shotgun muzzle down a...

Introduction

Greetings: I am a new black lab owner. He's 8 months old and I have been training him on sit, stay, come, heel, etc. He's been at a local gun dog trainer but introducing him to pigeons with pointing breeds. I'm deciding to teach myself and my dog and would like some guidance. I have researched breed...
