PA Grouse

I'm heading up to PA this year and would like to get on some grouse. I am visiting family just north of State College. Anyone know of somewhere I can get on some birds? Also, I am flexible on the time of year if that makes a difference.

Re: Flight feathers for young dog-help

I've heard of that with flushing dogs, but not pointers. Only "shoot a bird" if they perform to your satisfaction. Proper gun introduction for any gundog should create an association between the gunshot and the fall of the bird. IMO, it does not matter if the dog is a flusher, pointer or retriever....

Re: Flight feathers for young dog-help

I've heard of that with flushing dogs, but not pointers. Only "shoot a bird" if they perform to your satisfaction. Steadiness level that is. Shooting on the chase is enough to relate gunfire to birds. If your dog isnt steady, and then catches a bird after a shot, that is sucess for him. Therefor you...

Is this the first introduction to gun fire? Why do you want your Brit to get the bird?

Re: Training pups from whelping

I put different size steps in their pen(3", 5", & 8") for them to crawl up on and off. Wing on a string for awhile to get them chasing. Lots of handling by different people. Drop pans, blocks of wood, different noises when they are eating. I call them when I sent the food pan down--this same call w...

Re: Training pups from whelping

I've been reading it for the last several minutes. Very interesting read, I will definitely give it a shot. Thank you for the responses. Is there anything more specific to bird dogs that you guys do? Such as, how and what age to you help teach them to scent? Or anything else useful. This is turning ...

Training pups from whelping

Hey everyone, I'm not new to dogs, or hunting, but I am new to whelping a litter. I have some questions for the group. What do you like to do in the whelping box to get the pups for susceptible to training as they grow. I have read some good articles with ideas such as: Different types of surfaces f...

Re: Question about crate training my britt

There is a good chance your new friend was testing the rules when your wife put him up to go to work. When you went to bed, he whined and he got to stay close to you. He may have tried the same tactic when your wife left for work. As soon as the door closed, he probably shut his mouth because he kn...

I'm in Ringgold, but know dawsonville well, my son was born in Dahlonega. I do wish the GA would do more for birds on WMA land.

Re: Hard Mouth

I have had sucess with a "Soft Mouth Trainer" (a dummy with grooves in it, got it at Bass Pro). My dog was starting to play a little rough, but she is very soft now. Any opinoins on these are appreciated as well.

Re: Looking for people to train with in N. GA

Wow, this is a great forum. Thank you all for the advise. I did meet Brenda at Walnut Hills and they are great people, very helpful. I did not know about the pointing dog association. I will look into that. Also, I am planning on attending one of the next Navhda training days, maybe I will see some ...

I am in Ringgold ga. And yes I am planning on joining the Navhda chapter. My only concern is the training days in the summer. I think it would be too hot for my dog.
