Re: AKC - Grrr!!!
Yes, I understand it and I agree it is what the breeds should do. After all, AKC's responsibility starts and ends as our secretary keeping the Stud Book up to date. I sure don't want them telling us how are dogs are supposed to look or how many we should breed and raise. I still believe in personal...

Re: E-collar causing redness and sores on neck
I had thought about putting some sort of cloth around it, but wasn't sure if it would still be able to correct him through the fabric. That is fantastic advice! I'll pick up a pair of nylon socks tomorrow. Thank you so much.

E-collar causing redness and sores on neck
I recently purchased a Sportdog 800 for my Pit Bull/Greyhound X. It works great, he responds to it great, and training/behavior wise it has been a dream. I am having issues with his skin though. Whenever he wears the e-collar, his neck ends up red and raw. I've tried loosening the collar, but if I d...

Re: Dandruff
My 9 week old Gsp has a lot of dandruff I just use main and tail shampoo any recommendations to stop this? One of the main causes of dandruff is shampoo bathes that dry the skin. Ny dogs are 8 and 6 years old and have only had a couple of bathes and in every case it was because of some external fac...

Re: Fish Oil
I find it's less about capsules vs. liquid than about the quality of the oil to begin with. Not all fish oil is created equal. Generic "fish oil" is generally lower quality than a named one like "salmon oil", "sardine oil", etc. The process they use to remove toxins from the fish alters the quality ...

Re: Allergies Question
My Pit/Greyhound X has grass allergies. We use the Vetericyn when he gets really bad. Bathing helps a LOT. Just washing the allergens off him makes a big difference. We wash him once a week in the Zymox shampoo the vet gave us, and that keeps him perfect! Zymox is available OTC now, I believe. http:...

Oh no! Poor little thing! At least you caught her in the act, so it can come out before it does any damage.
I'll be sending good thoughts her way.

Re: GSP tentative about getting in the water..
Feed her a couple cheesies then throw the rest out just to the deep Not sure why I didn't think of food............. I tried using the chucker ball that she loves more than anything, but wasn't enough to persuade her. I carried her out quit a few times to swim back, as she swam back to shore...

Re: fur loss
Looks like abrasions to me - went through a rough patch. Mange normally starts on the face. Not always! My Pit Bull girl had demodex as a pup, and the first place she lost hair was on a toe. She actually only ever got one small spot on her face, but got a good few on her torso and legs. Demodex was...

Re: elk antlers
Antlers are the only chews I use anymore. My dogs blow through everything else in roughly 15 minutes, but a good antler will last a week or so. They've been miracles in my house!

Re: Acana Formula Change
Where exactly are you getting that they traded meat for lentils? Have you even read the new ingredient lists, looked at the guaranteed analysis, or anything at all? They took out a lot of the potato and replaced with lentils and field beans. Some meat ingredients actually moved up higher on the list...

I would definitely get a second opinion! It sounds like they're giving you the run around. I do think you have a good thought on the cheat grass/grass seed issue. That could definitely be a concern.

Re: Meat free diet for dogs
...so what would be the motivation for not feeding carnivores a meat based diet? This was my exact thought. What's the point? I'm sure it'd be more expensive than a regular kibble. Why even look into a vegetarian diet for a carnivore? If someone doesn't want to feed their pet meat, they should get ...

Re: Talk to me about e-collars please!
Melon definitely knows the meaning of the word "come". I trained him on recall when I got him, and he's been very reliable until recently. And even now, as long as he's not after a critter, his recall is reliable. It's only when he's after something, and then it's like he doesn't hear me. What I rea...

Talk to me about e-collars please!
I'm looking into getting and using an e-collar for my two year old Pit Bull/Greyhound X. However, I'm totally lost on the subject! I've never had to use one before, my older Pit Bull has never required it. My big problem right now is recall. His overall obedience is excellent, I can't complain about...

Re: Public Dog Wash??
The grooming shop I work at also has U-wash tubs available. I don't know about other places, but we are clean freaks! We clean between each dog and bleach the tubs out multiple times throughout the day, plus a final time at night for all of them. Dog washes usually have perks like extra strength sha...

I'm sorry you had this experience. It can definitely be scary to be reminded that our companions have teeth and can use them! Let me say first and foremost that I know the safety of your child is first in your mind, and that's as it should be! In situations like this though, sometimes corrections do...

New from Oregon
I'm terrible at these introduction things. I'm a 25-year-old dog groomer from Central Oregon. I grew up fishing and deer hunting with my dad, but I have never been bird hunting! I'm here mostly because I love learning about every aspect of dog ownership and activities, and also because I have a few ...
