As a first time birddog trainer I followed the Perfect start and finish to a T. Took my dog all the way to Master Hunter And Versitile Champion. It’s a great program, but does require pigeons.

My pup is also 9 months. She gets a free ride this hunting season with no restrictions. While she is learning whoa in the yard, it is not being used in the field. After hunting season we will start teaching whoa on birds. Let the wild birds teach your dog as much as possible.

Re: Steadying a Dog On Wild Birds

My pup is 8- months. This is a free hunting season for her. When the season is over, there’s time enough to break her then. She’s having fun and the birds are teaching her. That doesn’t mean we’re not learning whoa in the yard. She knows it well, but I’m not using whoa around birds.

My pup is 13 weeks and she’s about like you describe. We go for walks each day and every other time I bring a big dog and she gets out further then, but I don’t want her to depend on the big dogs so don’t do it every time. Some of that depends on the age of the dog. When I was training for UT and later invitational I trained every day. Some days were water. Other days field. Sometimes retrieve and always obedience. My dog is seven now and has passed all her NAVHDA tests as well as become a Master Hunter with AKC. She ...

GPS is not an overkill. While they are nice to help you keep track of the dog while moving, even more so to be able to find the dog if they are unable to get back to you. Such as if they were stuck in a trap.

If I were you, I would get the perfect start and run my puppy through all the steps there. That would put the dog in great position to move forward at the trainers. If you can build a good foundation on the pup now the trainer will be able to build on that and not have to start at the bottom.

I let my birds fly a bit before using them with the dog. Pigeons are usually pretty good fliers if given a chance to spread their wings. If they are homing let them out to fly for a few days and then try again. You might want to try one in a launcher before bringing the dog into the picture again. S...
