If the OP had asked "what do you like about trialing?" That would have been an honest question or asked "what draws you to trialing?" Ezzy those would have been honest questions and I'm sure people would be giving honest answers. Instead the OP showed their ignorance of what testing or trialing is, ...

NAVHDA doesn't trial they test. A trial is a competition best dog wins a test the dog is judged against a set of standards. If you don't understand the thrill of competing. To each his own do what makes you happy.

Re: Raising Pheasants for training
In Michigan I believe you need a game bird license to raise pheasant. You can train on wild ruffed grouse (partridge some call them) until April 16. The nesting season is closed to training April 17 to July 7. To train on your own land and shoot birds during that time you need a dog training permit....

I'm sorry I worded my question wrong. What does this test tell the breeder that 8 weeks of interaction and observation doesn't? As a breeder do you feel you learn something from the test you otherwise wouldn't know?

It sounds like you just want a good hunting dog not a trial dog. There is no reason you couldn't train the dog yourself. Consider joining NAVHDA it is a good place to learn with people willing to help. I'm pretty sure there is a good litter of shorthairs hitting the ground soon north of Colombus. Go...

female what to expect
I am not new to dogs but I have always had males. I now have a beautiful little female Gsp, 12 Weeks. I plan to keep her intact. What should I expect as far as her heat cycle? The northern Michigan NAVHDA chapter meets in Traverse City I think. You can also try on Michigan sportsmen forums and try the upland forum I believe there are several people on there that could tell you what is in your area better than I could. Good luck with your pup

Your pup is still young I would let it wear the collar for a month or two during play and training before I ever turned it on. that way they associate the collar with fun. Re: in your opinion, which breed for a beginner?
If I were in Cleveland I would make a phone call to Brenda Roe at Walnut Hills kennels right outside of Chattanooga and set up a time to see her dogs. Brenda breeds some of the nicest Gsp's you will find. Go over and spend a couple of hours and watch her dogs. She usually has a litter or 2 a year. ...

If you are comfortable with the EP stay with them a vacuum or broom should take care of the hair. The other breeds you mentioned would most likely be more versatile add to waterfowl hunting. You are going to get a lot of differing opinions weigh them all and go with what you feel works best for you ...
