Re: Launcher Orientation
DonF post is excellent. I also believe that he recommending not using the extra planted bird and I would do the same. If you pop the bird as soon as the dog makes scent but doesn't stop, what keeps the dog from going right in on the planted bird unless the launched bird takes its attention away from...

Re: First time off leash advice needed
Take the pup out now. Go for a walk and recall the pup when you turn directions. You need to build a bond in the field with the pup when it is little. I get a ton of dogs in for training that have never been off the cord or leash and once they are six or seven months, they are much to big to catch a...

Re: Favorite Dog names, Whats yours?
I like Chase, Jake, Lou, Sam, and Moe for some of my males. Gabby, Easy, Gracie, Penny, Jewel, and Passion for a few of my females. I had a buddy who named his lab Dirtbag and also used it as a call name in the field.

Re: To breed or not to breed??
You bring up some valid points but if we have to make a decision on a worst case scenario then no one would ever breed. I have bred dogs for many years and have had one dog have minor problems and another we had to do a cesarean but in both cases they were handled with out much problem. Only one ou...

Re: To breed or not to breed??
If you do not intend on becoming a breeder, I would spay the dog. There really is no reason to not do it. It will make for less issues around the home and there is simply no reason to breed a dog just so that it has been bred. Everyone looks at breeding as being a simple process that provides wonder...

Re: stud dog owner Q
It is on the owner of the bitch to do what is necessary to breed to the male of his choice. You can be as accommodating as possible, but it is still on him to do what is necessary if he wants pups. I think you are being more than fair and have offered plenty of alternatives. It sounds to me that you...

Re: Stopping pigeons
We had the very same problem and our floor is open below so we were getting a ton of excess food on the ground and a lot of waste with the open gravity style feeders. I made a wooden gravity feeder and cut (5) 1 1/2" holes in the side so they have to put their head inside to eat. Keeping the feed in...

Thank you. He is a very nice dog both in the field and also around the kennels. A very sweet and soft dog, but all go in the field and on birds. Here a few more pictures of him. The one is actually the field photo that Lou Pasqua took and used for the cover painting. If not, it looks very close to t...

Re: Any advice for this meeting with a trainer
As the others have said, there are many ways to train a dog. Finding the trainer that suits you and your dog can sometimes be easy and sometimes difficult but in my opinion, is very important. Some trainers are flexible and can work dogs differently based on what the individual dog needs. Some are n...

Re: Buying,Breeding,or does it make a difference
Most who are having issues selling pups are guys who have a few nice dogs and breed them. They set the price at the market for their area and sometimes above that and then find out after moving one or two and sitting on five or six that this breeding and selling thing is not as easy as they thought....

Re: New pup question.
Like all have mentioned, letting bad behaviour continue because the owner is too passive to want to correct the pup. No biting, no jumping up. You can still allow them to have fun and love them, but correct when needed. As for field issues, I would say playing tug of war, teaching to sit, and improp...

Re: Buying,Breeding,or does it make a difference
I breed and keep a fair amount of pups to evalute. Each breeder should have dogs that are consistent with what they want and like in a bird dog. Whether they are field trialed or simply a great line of fine hunting dogs, there should be a consistency in all their dogs within a given program. I see t...

I have had people confuse my pointers with several breeds also. They normally ask about my GSP's which I think is the most common comment.
My personal favorite is people commenting on my Dalmation. He is actually a tri-color setter that is predominately white with ticking.

I appreciate the words from Angus in regards to my dogs, but I definitely would not consider myself to be anywhere in the same league as Bob Wehle in regards to a breeding program or knowledge of genetics. Re: Circling the bird, do you know how to train for it?
I have twenty plus pointers and setters. I have four or five pointers that have learned to circle and pin birds. I have no setters who have learned the trait and most seem to scent runners following directly on the birds trail. The trait also seems to run somewhat in the genetics as I have seen sons...

I have the same print framed as well and most all of the covers he has had over the years. Lou is incredible with any of the breeds that he paints. It is very special to have your dog in print, but it is even more special when the painting is done by a world class artist. I am extremely fortunate to have meet Lou and also fortunate that he appreciates the looks of my dogs.

This is not the type of cover dog pointer that we all typically think of. My English Pointer "Mojo" has been featured in several paintings by accomplished artist Lou Pasqua. Im with Winchey in that I have a hard time believing the dog knows the age of the dogs it fights. I suspect it is a posturing issue you are not noticing. Fixing the dog wont help but it won't hurt either. I would neuter the dog because of future health issues and because I would not consider the dog...

Re: Finds the birds, but doesn't retrieve
The dog doesn't have enough bird work or birds shoot over it. It isn't marking the bird because it has had two flushed and shoot which isn't equivalent to a basic training day situation. Hunt the dog for a year or so and get a bigger sampling of what it actually will do in the field. Two reps are no...

x3. The others are right. This is a very difficult problem that should have never happened. Forget the food thing. You would only spend months either making the dog worse perhaps not gunshy around food. It does nothing for your problem which is not just gunshyness but now blinking birds due to the a...

I would agree with most of the others. It sounds to me that the pup has been pressured to stand its birds and exposed to shooting while doing so. I assume the pup was green broke to the flush and chasing at the flush since it was hunted at a young age and was standing its birds to flush for you. I w...

Unfortunately, I am in the camp of getting rid of the pup and starting over. I work with hundreds of dogs each year and all of the great or good ones that I have been around start early and easy. I have heard for years to be patient with this line or that line because they develop slow and need time...
